Question about Andy Cannizaro

Since he recently became our new head baseball coach, just curious about your opinions. I heard he was a good hitting coach, does he recruit well?
Posted on 12/8/16 at 11:55 pm to MullenBoys
You hired who we should have fired Paul for and hired.
You won.
You won.

Agree he should be LSU's baseball coach

I thought Mainieri was a good coach. It's kinda hard to replace a guy like Skip Bertman, he spoiled you. Lsu plays sound baseball, not sure why you dislike Paul.

He's great. And he recruits his arse off nationally

Well that's certainly good news for me then. But I still think Mainieri will continue to win at Lsu. There once were several bigs in the Sec (my team one of them) until Skip Bertman showed up.
Now a lot more Sec programs are putting a lot into baseball and it's just gotten harder for everyone. Let me also add that college baseball in general has become a bigger sport than it used to be. Not exactly where hoops or football is but there is no denying it's grown a lot in 20 years.

You certainly won't have to worry about a jackass coach who worries more about the umpires more than anything else

because paul is a joke

Coaching Changes Board

AC is a very well-thought-of coach. He quickly became a darling of many LSU fans. Certainly a rising star in college baseball coaching circles. While he had zero chance of getting the LSU job without first taking a HC job and having success, there have been a growing number of fans voice that they'd prefer him over PM.
As for PM, it is really not debatable the overall success that he has had at LSU, so you have to take the "gripes" with a grain of salt... he's easily one of the top coaches in CBB. His list of critics is growing daily, mainly due to inability to get wins in Omaha and occasionally not even make it to Omaha losing regional/super upsets (SB, Houston, Coastal). As you pointed out, Bertman created a beast with LSU baseball, and the expectations are not merely to have success... the expectations are not merely to get to Omaha... the expectations are to win national titles. Besides 2009, PM has not done that and has struggled in Omaha.
I wouldn't say PM is technically on the "hot seat"... he's certainly not. But his seat is getting warmer. He needs a nice run in Omaha, soon. Doesn't necessarily have to win it all, but he needs to get to the semis or the championship series.

People who want PM fired are nuts. Do you really trust this administration to hire anyone at this point?
And it's typical of LSU fans to want to hire a coach who has been, what 99% of others, would consider highly successful for a coach for has never run a program.
Cannizaro is well liked and might be great at MSU. Wish him luck, except when playing LSU.

Agreed.
But whether it's unrealistic expectations or not, it is what it is. The pressure is certainly on PM to make a run in Omaha. Whether right or wrong to have those expectations is certainly up for debate, but the expectations at LSU baseball are to compete for and win national titles. It is what it is, and PM hasn't come close enough since 2009.
It would take a really bad/mediocre year for PM to truly get on the hot seat and be at risk of losing his job, but every year that goes by without a deep run in Omaha the list of critics and grumblings are going to grow.
It's kind of crazy and hard to fathom how a coach that every baseball program in America would die to have, but at LSU we're about ready to be done with him. You can either embrace expectations or fight them, but you will not be able to change the expectation level of LSU baseball fans.
I know it is certainly several notches below football and basketball on the national landscape, but LSU truly is the Alabama football of CBB and the Kentucky basketball of CBB ... we want national titles or hit the road. Top8 aint good enough.
I also think PM is hurt as fans become more and more aware that the "awww shucks nice guy" routine that he puts on in interviews appears to be a total act. It's ok to be an arse, lots of great coaches are asses, but don't try to trick us into thinking you're a nice guy as he has done for a long long time. Many are starting to see through that, though.

Love Cannizaro and hope he makes it back to LSU eventually after having some success at MSU.
We'll find out a lot about Mainieri this year. His offseason hires/promotions were underwhelming to me. He's not a great coach, but you don't have to be in baseball. Talent can win a lot of games as opposed to sports like football where you can have a roster full of studs and you can still get blown out.

He's the brightest star in college baseball. We kept our crappy tired old worthless coach and gave you our superstar assistant.
Now CPM has a bunch of upperclassmen that returned. He'll keep his job again.

So you would rather LSU not do good so he can be fired? I don't get some of you people. We literally have fans that hope we lose in football, baseball and basketball so we can fire coaches.

Have you heard an interview with him or anything? He used to do a phone interview with the morning sports radio show in Baton Rouge and I would be ready to run through a wall after listening to him. He is high energy, a great motivator, and your players will love playing for him.

When did he say that? He didn't say "Now he'll probably go and win a national championship and we'll be stuck with him." He would probably rather these coaches not do just enough to keep their job, but not enough to actually compete for championships.
