I have said it since day 1…if this team didn't learn how to defend more consistently, it was going to bite them in the arse come conference play.

81 points allowed on your home court to a mediocre at best team? You don't deserve to win.

Until this group of guys commits to defending hard, they will lose games they should win.

These guys like to score, they like to alley-oop and make Sportscenter plays, and they like to play fast.

They do not like to play defense. Until they like to play defense, they will be an average team.

I am so tired of watching guards on the other drive the lane and dish to players for wide open layups. I am tired of seeing guys get wide open, uncontested 3 point shots.

I get that this team is thin and some of the players play a lot of minutes, but you just can't take possessions off on defense. It is maddening to watch and lack of good defense is why we can't have nice things.

They know how to defend properly, they just don't do it very often. And JJ doesn't seem to care about defense at all.

Agreed. Their defense comes and goes. Idk if its because tired legs or what but it was terrible last night.

Defense is all about desire and aggressiveness. It has to come from within. Everyone knows what to do with the ball in their hand it's instinctive for most. D can be taught but the effort required to play it properly can't . Dribble penetration is the new offense in CBB we suck at defending it...

Spot on redfish. Defense is ATTITUDE. This team lacks motivation and desire on the defensive end. It also lacks the basic fundamentals on the defensive side. Things that should have been taught in pee wee league like taking away the baseline.

Hands up in the passing lane. Boxing out when a shot is taken. Also, this team takes way too many gambles on defense. Especially when the shot clock is about to expire and leaves the opponent with a wide open jumper.

I do agree with this.

And it boils down to this….a lot of Brady's teams were not necessarily "fun" to watch because they played games in the 50's…and people back then said "I would almost rather lose games where we score in the 70's and 80's because those games are more fun to watch". Well, those people are getting their wish….

This right here. There were some games when we played lights out D, not just blocks but jumping passing lanes and getting turnovers. Its almost like they intentionally tried to not play D against State and Auburn, hard to watch.

I've been bad mouthing the defense for a while, but the numbers don't lie. LSU's defense is pretty efficient (35th in the nation according to KenPom). Last night was a poor effort on the defensive end (coupled with AU hitting several contested shots). However, other than maybe Martin, this team hasn't played that bad of defense.

What LSU does do is play at a fast tempo. Fast tempo = more overall shots for both teams which generally = more made baskets per game = more points

AU attempted 8 (61 vs 53) more FG's than they normally take. The also attempted 12 more FTs than usual (27 vs 15). That usually is the case in fast pace games.

On the flip side, LSU's offense is very inefficient. They have a high scoring avg because they attempt the 2nd most shots per game in the SEC. Again more shots = more made shots. However, they give away a ton of possessions with a high turnover rate. I think someone did the math and found that LSU turns the ball over on nearly 25% of their possessions each game. LSU's game is to try to outscore teams, not necessarily keep their opponent from scoring. That is a fine philosophy until you start giving your opponent extra possessions because of TOs

Any reason to why a 3-2 zone wouldn't have worked to stop the kick out shots last night? We have athletic bigs who can guard on the outside. I mean i'm sure we don't practice this much but it seems like it wouldn't be a bad adjustment in a game where we are getting killed from the perimeter.

If Martin, mickey, or Hornsby get in foul trouble we are dead in the water. For that reason they have no choice but to be a bit passive defensively.

Add on gray being a horrendous defender and you end up where this team is.

Team is soft mentally and physically.

A lot of wasted space on the bench..Coaches and Players.

As others have mentioned, defense is a part of the game that doesn't get the praise or highlight reel spots. You have to have it instilled in your game. Your defensive motor should run at 110% even in practice. That will translate into the game day attitude. That below average Auburn team ran up and down the court and scored almost at will. I don't think being tired has too much to do with it...I've run games (back in the day) playing point and I focused mainly on defense and dishing the ball and didn't really have an issue with being tired when I was "in the zone"...just didn't feel it. Getting in foul trouble, i could understand that being an issue. These guys only want the ball after the inbounds pass. Kentucky will destroy this team if they don't show a fire in their belly.

Well, he sure as hell doesn't care about offense, rebounding or ball-handling. Is there anything he does care about, other than recruiting?
