What am I missing? Are there actually lip readers in college baseball? Is the discussion between players or players and coaches that top secret that every player or coach covers their mouth when talking to each other?

Why not do it? You really want to be that guy who says, "we're going to try and pitch him inside" with everyone hearing/seeing you say it? It's just a precaution.

We had guys doing it in high school back in 1981, they would do it so the offense wouldn't know who would be covering second on a steal attempt, now these guys grew up playing together and both went on to play at LSU

Plus, there are TV's in the clubhouse so someone can be watching the broadcast in there and easily relay info to the manager.

I guess, but it seems that even when players are offering their pitcher encouragement that they all cover their mouth with their gloves. What are the lip readers gonna make of " Come on you got this" ?

And it also depends on the info. If you're trying to calm the guy down and just discussing mechanics or the mental aspect, it doesn't matter. But when it comes to strategy, there are signals for a reason.

No. They're usually talking about changing up signals in some way. The SS is often the one to call the picks at 2nd for instance.

funny yet a damn good question. it may be that since all of our games are televised the competition might have someone hired to monitor the mound meetings and quickly relay what was said to the coach who then signals the team. like, the coach said throw a fricking fastball here.

it's pretty silly. baseball is so damn cool.

Gotcha! I understand pitching strategies coming from the coach or catcher but it just seemed odd to see the shortstop or other infielders doing it. Thanks for the explanation.

A 60" high def TV maybe??

I can read a player's lips when I'm watching a game on TV.

Russell Reynolds could have benefited from covering his mouth with the glove earlier this year. But then we wouldn't have gotten one of the greatest clips ever.

Still cracks me up everytime

You're only assuming they're giving encouragement because they're covering their mouths.

He wanted the world to read his lips that day.
