Do you think CLM and other coaches teach the players how to talk to the media? Like, do they devote a day or two to practice answering questions in a vague, pro-team mentality?

I was watching the Jarrett Lee interview in another thread and people were saying he made great responses. Why are they great responses? Because although we really want to hear juicy details about what he really thinks, he humbles himself into being a like-minded, pro-team interviewee?

It really does seem like the coaches might have actually made this an important point to make.

I know for a fact at team meetings before practice miles tells the players who are requested to interview how to answer questions. That is why the same responses will end up getting repeated.

Also, the PR people like Michel Bonnett and the compliance people have to have interviews cleared so they know what to expect and get with the athlete and tell them how they will need to respond. This happens for all sports too, but obviously football is the main focus.

It's a standard practice that's been going on for years. Some teams bring in media consultants, or media coaches, if you will, to do a brief preseason seminar. For years, LSU has had Tommy Karam work with athletes in a laboratory setting, working on how to say things, what not to say, etc.

They show them videos of good interviews and bad interviews, including the kinds that get people fired, laughed at on TV and online, and more, and they use those as teaching tools. You can tell the players who are smart enough to think for themselves and stray a bit from the talking points, but you can rest assured they follow the lead set by LSU, whether simply echoing what coaches say or following the suggestions of their media training.

A lot of coaches, Miles included, aren't really equipped to teach others how to talk, but they definitely sanction that teaching when done by someone representing the university and approved by the coach.

If that's the case, why is it I can understand what the players are saying and can never figure out what Miles is saying. If Miles is telling them what to say, wouldn't it make sense that I would not be able to understand what the players are saying?

Perhaps Lee should give Miles pointers on how to communicate effectively.

Not if you interpret JJ's comments about the 2 QB system as whining...which is what they were.

ALL LSU players who are going to have any contact with the media are required to attend and complete media relations classes.
