Pitching staff for the postseason

An extension from the Peterson/4th starter thread... how do you see our postseason staff shaping up?
Obviously the 3 starters are locked up with Walker or Poche getting the game 1 regional start. Newman, Gilbert, Hess and maybe Bush are your best situational/late relief guys. Bain is likely the guy who comes in to eat up innings if we're losing by a lot or winning by a lot, not sure I have faith in him as a 4th starter though – although how much faith should you realistically have in a 4th starter?
Peterson could be the 4th starter as well, Beck I guess could figure into that role too.

I kind of don't get the Peterson for 4th starter talk. Hess has shown more to me than Peterson ever has.

Well Hess is one of your best bullpen arms, so you don't save him for a hypothetical 4th start.
Now if, for whatever reason, Hess isn't used and we're in a 4th game situation, then yeah, Hess prob gets the ball.

While Hess has been more impressive and consistent, he has more value in the bullpen right now. However, if he's available come a fourth game in need of a starter, he likely gets the nod over Peterson.
I was very impressed with Peterson last night compared to some of his previous appearances. Maybe he's just better suited to start games rather than come in as relief.
As far as Bain is concerned, I really hope he figures it out down the stretch. He has really good stuff, but he has walked way too many people this season.

Hess also has more value in the high leverage relief role and may need to be used multiple days over a tournament setting.
Kind of like when Daniel Bradshaw, Ryan Byrd, Nolan Cain got us wins in the SEC tournament that one year, you don't necessarily want your 4th best starter to be your 4th starter in the playoffs.

Regionals, Super regionals, and CWS are spaced far apart now a days that you can get by with 3 quality starters.
The SEC tournament is a different animal and you'll need a 4th starter if you go deep.

The CWS, yeah, you shouldn't need a 4th starter, and the practice doesn't apply in the supers since you only play at most 3 games.
The regionals though, you could play as many as 4-5 games over a 4 day period, so you definitely have to consider it then.

Agree with literally all of this.

I'd leave Peterson in that spot. He works much quicker than most and has the ability to get in a rhythm where as Hess is a key piece out of the bullpen that can throw up to 2 games in a weekend.

There was a long stretch after the A&M loss where Gilbert disappeared. I would have liked to see Gilbert get more of a chance for the the role Hess is in right now now that Newman is back. Gilbert has looked goo the last couple of outings since the 9th inning disaster.

I had already edited before your post. Just not paying enough attention.

If Strall is used at all in the postseason, I'll riot. (unless we're winning by like 20 runs).

Kiel definitely won't be here next year, probably the same case for Frederick too.

I think Reynolds can be relied on to come in for one out.

Only if we're playing Southeastern and Riser doesn't ask the ump to check his hat.
