Agree!! Dumbest idea I've ever read. And an athlete like LF would NEVER do it!

Exactly. Matthieu didn't give a frick, he knew he was a lock for a late first or early second round pick.

He was picked in the 3rd though. And i think he did give a frick, he is really apologetic in his interviews and knows he let the team and Miles down. He isnt like some of these other frick sticks that tweet out they are going to expose LSU or some shite because they simply werent good enough.

He will get over a million dollar insurance policy. That's standard.

Mike Williams got a $10m policy while at USC in '2013....LF will get at least the same amount.

No way. He'd forever be called "George" for going out on a high note.

this is a reasonable business decision for LF to consider.

i agree. IF he won't lose his draft ranking over it, which i doubt he would, then it's the best decision.

it's not complicated. if someone told me i could make millions of dollars by taking a year off i'd do it.

i don't know if lf would do it or not. i hope he doesn't, but i couldn't blame him if he does. anyone who says they care about him shouldn't blame him either, including lsu teammates and fans.

Florio really went all out on his radio show with this segment.

He very subtly accused LSU of being a bunch of scumbags for not "doing the right thing" and advising Fournette to sit out.

He basically came across as he was the great white hero for this poor black kid that needs someone to save him from himself.

Also went after Michael Bonnette a good bit. Jeez.

ESPN has been running with this meme since the Sunday after the Auburn game. Dear Jesus, the liberal bed-wetting mindset pervades every aspect of American life. They were making slave analogies on tv the other day. They were so certain that Leonard is being exploited (omg!!!!omg), and of course too freaking effete to understand the competitive mindset that a guy like Leonard has.Not to mention unbelievably condescending and patronizing to Leonard, that he's too stupid to look after his own damn business. Frick em all. Bunch of establishment weenies.

Pimp are you on board with the NFLs rule on this? Because that's really a separate question than "should he sit out".

If he had the kind of wimp mentality it takes to even think about taking a year off he wouldn't be as good as he is.

I can't believe the 3 year rule is still in place. It's plainly exploitative.

Ehhh, how much of the value of what the NFL is (and, hence, what its players are able to earn) hinges on the fact that a good number of its stars are able to establish themselves as stars before even entering that league?

It's not exploitive. It's a common sense business decision to maximize what their product is worth.

If the college football system isn’t going to give him fair compensation and if the NFL is ready to do so, he should be allowed to enter the draft.

not the LSU's fault the NFL made that rule

quote:

Thanks to that arbitrary and NFL rule aimed at keeping college football coaches sufficiently happy to allow NFL scouts to attend practices, watch game film, and otherwise gather info about the vast majority of players who wouldn’t be ready or able to enter the NFL after fewer than three seasons, Fournette must wait until 2017. And so the question becomes whether he should make a business decision to not play in 2016.

what a joke. The NFL loves the free minor league and marketing college football provides them.

If an engineering student patents something, he can make money off of it and not be kicked out of school or have his education somehow tainted. A business student can start a business and profit off that without society collapsing. The restraint on a player's earning is ridiculous and frankly, unamerican.

That depends on the university and mostly on the resources used. If a student uses university resources to help come up with and develop the idea, then the university has a system in place limiting their rights to it. Graduate students have the same issue, and I would compare a student-athlete more to a graduate student.

In most places, the grad student gets no rights to their technology and that is fine as it is done with resources given to them by the college.

Now, if a player brings his own resources or pays his own way to go to college, i.e. a walk-on, then that is a different story.

It is a messed up system, but acting like college athletics is some unique situation is a bit ridiculous.

Sure, they are allowed to protect their investment and prohibit players from entering the league (actually, because the bar was negotiated with current players, not potential players, that part of the CBA's enforceability is an open question, but let's assume it is). The NFL can make rules regarding its league. It can then use college football as a free minor league and marketing arm which hypes up its players before they ever become pros.

But what pisses me off is that the same people preventing him from making what he is worth on the open market, but denying him access to that market then use their considerable media influence to then bad mouth someone else for denying him his earning potential. The NFL doesn't want Fournette to sit out for his benefit, they want all of that free marketing and development at no cost and no risk. Now that he's good enough, they want to pressure him in to stop playing to protect their non-existent investment in him.

Florio can go get fricked.

exactly, and this is the opposite of the Mark Cuban beef with FIBA where he actually has an investment in the athlete

it is ironic to me that the NCAA trumpets the student athlete not being greater than the normal student, except of course when it comes to the student athlete gaining compensation for their skill in the open market place. An opportunity that is readily available to the normal student if they have a marketable skill.
