LSU hires MSU's Saban

Saban was not a top tier coach and who inherited a team with a boatload of problems He was also 43-26-1

LSU to hire Miles

Miles was 28-21 in 4 years as HC

Damn, has any other profession seen a spike in salary like football coaches?

exactly...TAF was created to avoid the odds that the program will ever hit 1990's Hallman-Dinardo Era football....if a coach goes 3-9, 4-8...the plug will be pulled on the skippy.

back in the 90's we didnt have facilities like we do now....

LSU recruits itself..all you need to do it let the thoroughbreds run...

Some really great gems from the Saban Article people should keep in mind.

quote:

holy shite coach salaries have come a long way.

quote:

''I liked the challenge of this football program,'' Saban said. ''I think there is great tradition. I think the Southeastern Conference is a very competitive, outstanding football conference. There's a challenge to being part of that conference that kind of intrigued me.''

winners want a challenge. this bullshite about "he can play with low expectations" and "this is an easier way to the playoffs" are for coaches without a drive to really be great.

quote:

''Security is always something that's important to you and to your family,'' Saban said. ''But it's not the reason I came here.''

Winners want to win. Lets find another winner.

which is why we have no front 7 depth.

LSU doesn't recruit itself.

Fertile land doesn't grow crops on its own, you gotta cultivate it.

Money was an object in those days. They finally decided to bite the bullet and get into the big time game and it paid off.

Saban sured nailed his answers to the job application in that article. Really interesting to read that 15 years later.

Just reading those articles and seeing both coach's records and honestly just above average success make me wonder if a coach like Mike Leach (who did ok at tech and who I think is doing unbelievable at Washington st) would not only win here, but thrive

I see LSU hiring a coach like Saban and Miles again. Someone who is not widely talked about. Someone who hasn't broken out yet and has had a consistent 8-4 or 9-3 record at his previous school, but has not reached 10 wins in a season.

I think what we are looking for more than that is a coach who took a bad program and made it good.

Michigan was 0-11 the year before saban got there.
OSU hadn't gone to a bowl since Barry Sanders when Miles go there.

Some didn't pan out while others flamed out (character issues) and left the defense high and dry with no depth.

0 linebackers last year and only 2 the year before.
Only to 2 the year before that and Chavis tried to move 1 of them to DE.

You make a good point in cultivating the RIGHT kind of talent.

I'd like to see kids who stay 4 years here...losing that kind of talent consistently seems to be something LSU has struggled with.

1. i think that is a bit over exaggerated. People forget a lot of the juniors who left early lately were RS juniors.

2. thats just how it is. Talented RBs aren't gonna stay 4 years if they are good. A lot of players won't. NFL careers are short, and you make enough money to pay for the rest of school easy.
