He was asked to spy Travis and basically prevent him from ripping off big gains. I think he largely did that but that also allowed Travis to sit back and pick apart the zone defenses or extended duration man coverage.

He’s lost when asked to drop back in coverage. Kelly admitted that in his presser.

Perkins did 2 things last year

Spy the QB and Pass Rush

that’s most of what he did last night.

The issue is, spying and pass rushing don’t work when the other team runs the ball.

He did a lot less downhill pass rushing last night. On critical 3rd downs he was flat footed staring at the QB who had 5 seconds to throw it. He should be told on 3rd down to pick a lane and go after the passer.

He got the lowest PFF rating of anyone on defense. He scored a 41. That’s flat out unacceptable.

The kid can't do both, man, I think you're being ridiculous sayin he shouldn't have allowed him to sit back and pass as if he could fly in and sack him. His job was to spy him and keep him in the pocket, he did that, really well. It's up to the others to go and get Travis and sack him, if Perkins does it, he loses containment of Travis because Travis is fast and no ordinary running QB, fast enough to elude Perkins and run for a big gain. On 1 play Perkins actually closed in on him running him to an LSU DLineman's side, and that knucklehead took the wrong angle towards Travis and let him get outside to complet a pass.

Maybe, but that shouldn’t have been his job

Well, Travis still broke contain plenty of times while Perkins was spying.

Perkins performance is on Perkins. He seemed to shy away from contact all game.

you're right on that, I said last night they should have let him play his normal game and go and get the QB, moving him around on defense like they did last season. He rushes Travis from different angles lining up, Travis is running for his life and probably makes a lot of mistakes, but no they gotta change things. Teams can always ruin something that is working really well by trying to change it, and that's what they did last nite with Perkins.

Travis had way too much time and put our secondary in a bad position.
I dont know if blitzing wouldve mad much difference witheir OL and Travis decision making.

I am surprised nobody else is pointing out Perkins was a complete non-factor. I zeroed in on him many plays and he simply wasn’t hustling, disrupting or cracking into people. I suppose I read the hype all summer and expected him to leap over the line like Bobby Boucher and sack the QB every play.

Dude was lazy. I was frustrated with scheme we put him in but his effort was poor for whatever reason.

Some of you keep saying the same thing without defining where you actually want to put Perkins. It’s really easy to say the staff should just “use him like they did last season” with no recognition of the fact that they usually had to take a guy who was better playing the Jack position overall off the field to do it.

It’s pretty obvious that most of you want Perkins to be a full-time Jack because that’s where he’s typically made the most plays. Unfortunately, what you guys don’t want to talk about is that Perkins is not very good against the run and is undersized for the position. Remember the A&M game? They specifically targeted him and ran the ball right at him, which completely took him out of the game. He was just as much of a non-factor in that one as he was tonight.

So we can leave him in there knowing every team that can run the ball will do all they can to do the same thing. And if you rotate him a ton, you are basically turning him into Raheem Allem- just a edge pass rush specialist and nothing else. Maybe that’s what he ultimately is, but that’s a somewhat limited role. It’s also easy for teams that use a lot of tempo to keep him on the sidelines in that role just by going fast and not substituting for an entire drive.

What else is there? You can try to play 3 LBs and keep him on the outside, but passing teams will constantly put him in coverage situations. Unfortunately, this is really his ideal position, but it’s just not realistic to keep him there in modern football. Teams will just put him on coverage situations and exploit him there. Or there’s ILB, where he is now.

As much as everyone is bitching right now, the staff is trying to find a way to keep Perkins on the field for as many snaps as possible. Do I think they could handle how he plays the position better- yes. They did put him into a role that was too reactive vs FSU.

That said, let’s see what happens with Perkins’ role vs other QBs who are not as versatile as Travis- which is every other QB we face this year. The rest all skew noticeably toward either passing or running and aren’t going to hurt you equally with both, so we won’t be playing them the same way. If they can dial up his aggression from the middle against the rest of the slate and put him on the edge for passing 3rd downs, then maybe it works.

He only rushed 7 times. He played downfield and in coverage. That’s not where we need him. The coaches neutralized him.
