Good call or bad call that worked?

The announcer made it seem like it was a hit and run, which I didn't understand.

Mainieri says on Papierski go-ahead hit on Saturday ... says it was first time in his 35 year career he called 3-0 hit-and-run. #LSU

So PM is calling this a 3-0 hit and run...

I change my stance. That was so dumb... "didn't want Pap to walk"

Good lord.

Unless you're Barry fricking Bonds, I'm not giving anyone a green light at 3-0. That's just bad baseball.

It wasn't a hit and run.

Pap was quoted by Luke Johnson as saying he looked in the dugout and was given the green light to swing if he wanted to.

And he wanted to when he saw a fast ball.

ETA:
quote:

“The first two pitches I was going to bunt, and they were both balls, and I got the swing (sign at) 2-0, and I took it and it was a ball,” Papierski said. “It was 3-0, and he gave me the swing (sign) and I just put a good swing on the ball.”

With one out, runners on first and third and Alabama’s Davis Vainer on the mound, Mainieri felt his best chance at taking the lead was in that moment.

“I thought that kid, Vainer, had one of the best curveballs I’ve ever seen, and I thought the 3-0 pitch might be the only time we saw something straight,” Mainieri said. “We probably had a better chance of driving in the run on a 3-0 pitch as opposed to starting with a fresh count even if the bases were loaded.”

If so, then I retract that post...

But James Moran, Andrew Lopez and Jacques Doucet have PM quoted:

"In my 35 years of coaching, called the most unorthodox play ever. A 3-0 hit and run. I didn't want Papierski to walk."

Mainieri is telling all the media it was a hit and run. He wants the credit for the win so bad.

I have no problem with the 3-0 green light to drive in a run from third with less than 2 outs. But a 3-0 hit and run in that spot is just awful. But like Skip used to say, "sometimes you can choose wisely and it doesn't work out, other times you make the wrong call and good things still happen."

Sounds like this could be a hit and run. He doesn't use the terms "green light" or "hit and run" so it's not the clearest quote. PM's quote is much more to the point.

He just met with the media an hour ago. That's where my quotes are from and he is definitely telling the media it was a hit and run.

It's got to be a hit and run because PM said he's never done that in 35 years. He's given plenty of green lights at 3-0 before.

We have a quote from Pap where he tells the reporter he was given the sign to swing and PM telling the media today it was a hit and run. I think it's pretty clear.

Jesus, ell, you can really be insufferable sometimes. Read the fricking link I posted. I didn't include the second paragraph just for brevity's sake.

Read the quotes from today. Paul is telling all the local reporters he called a hit and run.

I'm only relaying exactly what PM is quoting as saying just 1 hour ago... he's telling the media he called a hit and run on a 3-0 count which is something he hasn't done in 35 years coaching. He told this to multiple media members at the same time.

I read the whole thing this morning, Russian. Thanks.

Is this a quote or is Luke making the same assumption all of us did from the situation itself and Pap's comment?

A double play ball and pap would have been hit and run by the bus.
