I mean lets go back even further, discounting the rebuild of Indiana basketball:

Made the tourney at Marquette in 5 of his last 7 years with a final 4 appearence.

Then at Indiana, coming off sanctions:

quote:

The fifteen game win improvement in 2011-2012 was the largest single turnaround in the NCAA that season.[20] Crean's guidance of the program to success from "unthinkable depths" was widely regarded as one of the most remarkable rebuilding projects in NCAA basketball history.[1] As a result, he was named the mid-season Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year,[21] the Sporting News Big Ten Coach of the Year,[22] and the ESPN.com National Coach of the Year.[23]

quote:

Combined with the returning players from the previous season, Indiana dominated the college basketball landscape, spending 10 weeks ranked #1 in the country and all but two weeks in the top 5.[24] The Hoosiers won their first outright Big Ten regular season title in 20 years, and garnered a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, also their first in 20 years.

So while I don't think he'd be a homerun hire, I think he's a pretty safe hire. Well as long as our players don't hit each other with cars

It seems like he's pretty good at building up programs, but struggles to take the next step.

Our fans overvalue the type of coach LSU basketball can pull in. I mean, look at the football program. We thought we could pull in the top available coach in the country, we thought we could make NFL coaches want to leave their jobs to come to LSU. We got a career 10-25 coach.

LSU Football is a Top 10 job, don't be an idiot.

Just because Alleva doesn't know what he's doing, it doesn't change that fact.

Although, LSU will end up lucking out on O.

Lsu has been to the final 4 more recently than a Crean coached team has.

He's making the basketball hire as well.

I truly hope he's the one in a thousand that breaks the mold of fired coaches that are hired again at a major program and win a conference title.

I used the 80's as a reference for those fans that remember when LSU was at its best and stated the obvious that recruiting has nothing to do with getting instate talent

What?

Recent LSU final four teams

1981 top players

Rudy Macklin- Ky
Ethan Martin-LA
Leonard Mitchell-LA
Howard Carter-LA

1986 Top players

Redden- LA
Wilson- LA
Taylor- LA
Williams- CA

2006 top players

Big Baby- LA
Temple-LA
Thomas- LA
Mitchel- LA
?
Shaq - TX
Brandon - Chicago(?)
Roberts - SC
Cook - NJ
Scales - TX
Jose Vargas -
Willie Sims - NYC
Dunking Dutchman
I was at every game home game and most road games including the elite 8 games in NO, didn't make it to the final 4 in 80-81. Sims, cook and scales played a ton. They made LSU a national brand.

And all of those other teams that made elite 8 and sweet 16 runs and sustained success

I agree with everything you wrote. Investing in a coach for 3MM will enrage people on here and the media. But it is the right thing to do because like you mentioned we can still be VERY successful and make a lot of money with basketball - more than baseball and every other sport outside of football like we did in the 80's.
That's why this hire is so important. We don't need to be Uk or Duke. We can make the tourney consistently and some elite 8's every 3-4 yrs. people will invest. Look at Wisconsin for goodness sakes. We are easier to get into and a more attractive job.

As for the small schools in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, I am sure I could find five players that I would want to be on LSU. If you don't believe that then you have a highly inflated view of our talent level. If nothing else look at the abysmal level of our bench players and lack of depth.

I could care less about the recruiting. A good coach can trump talent. Dayton has never had a 4 star or higher. How are they consistently in the tourney? Good coaching.

I have a friend who is a long-time Indiana fan - watches every game every year. He knows basketball - played in high school and some college. He HATES Crean - says we should not hire him and he is a poor coach. Says his teams lack fundamentals and discipline and often time lose focus and motivation.

Sounds like the perfect candidate for Alleva.

Who really thought this? As long as Saban is playing for championships why would a new guy take the toughest road for ultimate success? How many NFL coaches have voluntarily left the NFL to coach Power 5 conference schools? Seriously, who really thought this was happening?? When the new BB coach is introduced I doubt many fans will be happy, it is what it is.

This just isnt true.please show me all these programs that have won a title without talent. If you have a guard that can consistently take guys off teh dribble, finish at the rim in traffic and hit open shots, all the other coaches are thinking,"why didnt I have my guard do all that?" Talent trumps coaching 99% of the time.

They have as much talent as anyone else in their conf.

Which teams win the sec? The most talented.
Which teams win the big 12? The most talented.
Which teams win the acc? The most talented.

Its such a bullshite myth that coaching trumps talent. Of course if talent is equal then coaching matters.

He ain't come here because his mentor, Bobby Knight, would tell him to look elsewhere.

Kostas is a 4 star guy at Dayton. They know how to recruit the AAU circuit. And they revruit guys who fit their style of play. They have 2 guys who were top AAU scorers. And even the 3 star guys they have also had offers from other major basketball programs.

Some people gets it and some refuses to accept this fact. Some here blames the coach on a player missing a wide open 3 pointer...let alone a free throw to win the game.
