If he had waited, the ball would've touched the UNC player that hit him.

Or the UNC player would have grabbed the ball at the 10 yard mark.

Screwed either way.

My understanding is that if the players makes a move towards the ball (like the LSU player did last night), they're fair game

You are correct. That was the correct call. It was a freshmen mistake.
He is fair game regardless and the NC team did NOT hit the ball, they hit the player. the ball hit the LSU player (Blue?) I think.

From the NCAA rule book:

quote:

ARTICLE 3. a. No Team A player may touch a free-kicked ball until after:
1. It touches a Team B player (Exception: Rules 6-1-4 and 6-5-1-b);
2. It breaks the plane of and remains beyond Team B’s restraining line
(Exception: Rule 6-4-1) (A.R. 2-11-5-I); or
3. It touches any player, the ground, an official or anything beyond Team B’s
restraining line
.

quote:

No Team A player may block an opponent until Team A is eligible to touch a
free-kicked ball

UNC can't touch the ball until 3 above, none of which had happened. Hadn't touched an LSU player, hadn't touched the ground beyond ten yards, or broken the ten yard plane.

Luckily for us, these same crappy SEC refs missed a PI call in the endzone at the end, so it all comes out in the wash.

The play was called the way it was because the receiving team player touched the ball.

NOW what was missed is that it is ILLEGAL to block a receiving teams player UNTIL the ball has gone 10 yards.

1) The ball must go and remain at least 10 yards downfield from where it was kicked. There is no requirement that the ball hit the ground in NCAA rules. Or,
2) The ball must be touched by a member of the receiving team.

A couple of penalties or violations that could cause the kicking team to not keep possession are:
1) Illegal touching - Touching the ball by a kicking team member before they can legally posses it per the rules above.
2) Illegal blocking - Blocking a receiving team member before they can legally possess the ball per the rules above.

I didn't think it was a penalty at first, but I took ESPN's word for it that they knew what they where talking about. I'm sure we won't hear anything else about it knowing our history with shitty officiating going against us.

LSU didn't hit the ball first. Our player got hit before the ball got to him. That's kick catch interference.

Yep. Let's hope that the SEC officials review(now that is the big joke) reams the crew there for not calling it when it was obvious even at normal speed.

This may help.. OH and BTW this happened to BAMA versus TN in 2009. How did the SEC respond? .

Here is what an NCAA official says about an unrelated game:Notice the bold

Answer
I am a little unclear on your question as to whether the Kicking team was on side or off side. The Kicking team must be behind their restraining line (usually the 30 yardline unless after a safety or placed elsewhere by penalty). If the ball was kicked from the 30 yardline the kicking team must not cross the 30 yardline until kicked. If the ball is legally kicked on side and the kicking team has not encroached into the neutral zone before the ball is kicked they may run ahead of the ball. The kicking team may not touch the ball legally until it goes ten yards and passes the Receiving team's restraining line - usual the 40 yardline. However they may not block the Receiving team until the ball has gone 10 yards and/or it has been touched by a member of the receiving team.
If the ball was kicked then the players ran faster than the ball was traveling and went beyond the kicked ball, that is legal but they could not legally touch the ball until it crossed the 40 yardline. If they touched it illegally before it had traveled 10 yards there would not have been a flag but a bean bag tossed by the officials and the ball awarded to the receiving team at the illegal touching spot. If the ball was touched legally and recovered by the kicking team who was on side then it would be the kicking team's ball at the spot of recovery.

I am not clear on your question/facts if you are claiming the kickers were 8 yards beyond the ball before it was kicked - if so then that is a penalty for kicking team off sides and the ball should have been rekicked. If you have further information I would be more than happy to address it. Thank you for your question

If you watch the video of what happend. Contact happend before we touched the ball. Replay was correct though since they cannot throw a flag due to replay. But this isnt the first time SEC officials have fricked this up.
