Once again, having Jarrett Lee at QB helps the LSU running game

And this is true even when his passes aren't quite hitting. From that video that somebody posted earlier, we see that there were several "almost" deep passes throughout the game...
25 – Clement (1Q)
30 – Boone (1Q)
30 – Beckham (1Q)
18 – Boone (3Q)
15 – Beckham (4Q -- would have been a TD)
37 – Beckham (4Q -- catch negated by holding penalty on LSU)
Many have been arguing about whether the receivers or the QB were more to blame, but to me, that's not really that important. I think it's clear that (A) the receivers did not have their timing down with Lee, and looked out of sync, and (B) that the passing game could have been better.
Nonetheless, despite the lack of big receptions, the passing game was still very very DANGEROUS, and the Ducks knew it. Peterson had a great game, and Randle and Beckham and Clement were always on the verge of doing something big.
The Ducks tried to stack the box earlier in the game, but over time, they had to respect Lee's ability to read defenses and pass deep-to-intermediate over the middle.
So for the passing game, we get 10-22, 98 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, and 1 sack for 6 yards, translating into 23 plays for 92 yards, which (other than the PI penalties and lack of turnovers) is quite bad. I certainly hope that Lee and the receivers get their timing down better before the game in Starkville on Thursday the 15th.
But looking at the running game, we have the sack and then 3 "team loss" rushes (on bad snaps, etc.) for -21 yards ( LINK), and other than that, we get 202 rushing yards on only 44 attempts, good for 4.59 yards per carry.
So what I and others have been saying for years is demonstrated yet again--the LSU running game works better with a pro-style QB like Lee in the game to keep the opposing defensive backs honest.

Great post, maybe the best synopsis of the offense that I've read and I completely agree.

Just because lightning rarely strikes you doesn't mean it's not dangerous.

You said what I want to hear, so I like it

U should put dangerous in quotations, but otherwise. Totally agree.
Lobed the play of our WHOLE team. Look forward to a. Entertaining year.

Very apt comparison.

football always works better when the running backs run and the QB chunk, its a simple principle.

That is an interesting analysis, Doc...might be true.
The Ducks brought the house a couple of times, but it won't touch what Saban will bring. And that will define the negative limits of Lee's ability, and the strategy Miles employs to exploit those abilities. If those receivers can make the hard catches...we'll be fine, because I think Lee can deliver the ball. Most every pass was on the mark.
I think what is more critical than having a qback that can haul arse, is an offensive line that can keep him out of trouble...and open holes for those RB's...so that the blitz won't come.
I'm all in for another flag hanging over the stadium this year. I loved that game.
Ty Mat is a phenom!

They continued to put 8 in the box. Lee did nothing to help the running game.

This is the type of play that will prove over and over how dangerous our calculated passing game will be in the future.
This won't be the last time Lee finds a wide open receiver, and I mean all alone down field wide open.
With Lee, I feel he could have a couple of 300 yard games this season. He may not. But I haven't felt that about LSU's passing game for two years.
Excellent analysis,Doc.
Go Team Go!!!

I've tried to analyze LSU's offense with both QBs and make sense of things, but I have trouble.
We rushed for 288 against A&M and their rush D was ranked pretty good before we played them. We ran for over 225 I believe against Bama and they had a top 10 rushing D. JJ was the QB against A&M and the primary QB against Bama (though JL did have that nice pass toward the end). Yet, in some other games, we struggled.
All I know is that we scored mostly TDs last night and whatever we need to do differently against each team to continue that habit, I'm all for...
