I understand the recruiting at that position hasn't been great but Brumfield was highly touted and the we should have atleast one more decent body out of the rest. I know we lack depth , but the first string looks terrible early in the game.

The o line narrative didn't start till Monday after the state loss. Certain BR media folks are screaming it all day and every day and it's being parroted. That's it.

Think about it.

Lsu hasn't had to "rebuild" in a decade. Now it's suddenly so bad. Yeah ok.

We are terrible at run blocking . It's not just pass pro this year. That's what is mind boggling. We can say , "we don't have true tackles", but we should be able to run the freaking ball against Syracuse with tight ends in the game. Add to that we have a NFL caliber running back.
Does not make sense.

A lot of you are right but there's one thing I haven't seen yet in this thread that needs to be mentioned. OL Coach Grimes SUCKS !!!!

I agree, but we were able to dominate inferior teams.

Miles/Grimes/Stud poor recruiting, square pegs in round holes, no development, poor coaching, scheme doesn't fit. Actually makes a ton of sense.

O keeping Grimes makes no sense.

LSU hiring O makes no sense.

Alleva having a job makes no sense.

According to some who insist they are all knowing, this is all Miles fault and O has nothing to do with it. Anybody who dares to offer a different opinion is called names, ridiculed, and treated like the enemy. That sounds familiar.

I remember Grimes brown nosing O pretty good on social media while he was the interim, I know I heard O mention Grimes as very" supportive" of him throughout his interim and transition to permanent, couple that with us having Deculus who was a prized recruit committed. I feel like those things together kept Grimes on staff. The fan base wasn't happy with Grimes last year. I think it will be interesting to see who is assigned as lead recruiter on our Top Oline wants. If it's not Grimes , the writing is on the wall.

PFF didn't consider pass blocking at all. It's clear

I think this is such a big part of the problem. LSU Sports.net lists only 99 players on the entire active roster. Most Division I teams have about 120. We are painfully thin.

I'm with ya OP. I never expected this oline to be elite, but they took a major step back from last year, for no good reason.

And the depth excuse is Crap. We hardly ever rotated olinemen last year. The same 5 played like 93% of the total snaps.

Go actually count names instead of looking at numbers lol. There are only 99 numbers

We have exactly 120 players on the roster.

They were Pffs top ratesd college offensive line last season. I honestly have no idea ho

Because most LSU fans watch the games half blind. People are wondering all over about how LSU can't run like they did last year. In 2015 and 2016, LSU was top 3 in the country in rush average. Those OL consisted of Pocic, Clapp, Teuhema, and Weatherby for almost all of those two years. The interior of the OL was incredible and was the reason why we got so many big long arse runs despite our enemic pass offense most of the time. We were really good on OL. Stop looking at games vs Bama as the measuring stick. Ole Miss's OL didn't come close to LSU's yet they could move the ball because they can scheme around that.

Teuhema is gone, Pocic is gone, and Clapp is playing out of position. Had we kept Dodd and Teuhema, the middle of the OL would be fricking solid like always.

LSU fans blaming OL for bad pass offense is typical LSU fan rhetoric. There are workarounds for this, and long arse developing plays is not one of them.

That says more about that rating system than it does about our line. No way in hell were we anywhere close to the top offensive line last season.

They wouldn't look near about as bad as individuals if they were playing as a unit. The oft heard "gel". I don't think great, but much better.

I've see bad switch offs (leaving others hanging), improper pulls, blown assignments, 4 recognizing blitz/rush and 1 not (blowing the whole damn thing up), all of 'em getting their shoulders turned and raised/dipped (balance & squaring up), bad schemes (e.g. reach blocks impossible to make) and of course fundamental mistakes even freshmen OL shouldn't make.

So not playing as a unit, partially stemming from bad coaching. And yes, Canada is going to have to help them out with playcalling but that could be a catastrophe. Not limiting ourselves right now might be the only thing keeping this O moving as well as it is with the crappy OL play.

And I disagree, they make sense. If you go back more than 1 year and don't use yds/carry as THE one and only metric for ranking the OL, they make perfect sense.

I don't understand why we think last year's o line was great.

They got pushed around and were terrible in big games last year. And I do t remember the last time we had a line that was consistently good at pass blocking.

LSU has not had a great pass-blocking line since 2007. Miles built the team around the I-formation and power runs. Crude, but effective. However, pass blocking was suspect throughout the Jefferlee era and no better than adequate for Mett. As we tried mobile QBs between Mett and Etling, it is more difficult to judge. With Etling in the pocket last year, pass protection was not reliable, and that was with Pocic in the middle.

LSU offensive line struggles are blown out of proportion. A lot of it has to do with a shift in philosophy. The guys who are here currently would be fine running a different system, O and Grimes had a year to recruit the type of player they wanted. Canada has had time to recruit the type of players for his system.

Next year LSU will be replacing 3 players on the line and we can hear about how bad it is again.
