Ole Miss playing home games in Jackson vs. LSU

Ole Miss used to always play LSU in Jackson up until the mid 90s. Why did they play there and why did they stop? The size of their on campus stadium? If I am not mistaken they played some home games in Tiger Stadium vs. LSU?

My dad used to tell me the horror stories of going to Jackson to watch that game

I remember MSU playing in Jackson but I don't remember Ole Miss. Probably on campus stadium too small and LSU game only game they could sell a lot of tickets.

We last played Ole Miss in Jackson in 1992. We last played Miss State in Jackson in 1990.
For years Ole Miss and State had the smallest stadia in the SEC after Vanderbilt. Vaught-Hemingway had approx. 37,000 and Scott Field had 35,000. But Mississippi Memorial Stadium -- as it was known then, only had 47,000 before increasing it to 60 or 61,000 in the late 1980's.
The two played several double headers more than once involving LSU. The last being in 1986 when Tennessee beat Ole Miss in the "early game" and LSU beat State, 47-0 in the night cap. In the 60's and 70's LSU and Ole Miss would play in the day followed by Alabama and State. Certainly other teams participated in their double headers, too.
Unlike Birmingham vs Tuscaloosa, its a pretty good distance from Jackson to Oxford. Ole Miss slowly started expanding and coupled with the NCAA stopping teams hosting recruits at "neutral sites" this faded away from a lot of teams.
Ole Miss not only played LSU several years in a row in Baton Rouge in the 1950s and early 1960's, they "hosted" some games in Memphis, which is actually closer than Jackson. For years Ole Miss played their "home return" vs Tennessee in Memphis.
State did the same thing, too, even more so. In addition to playing LSU in Baton Rouge many years in a row, mainly again in the 50s and 60's, they elected to move "home" games vs Alabama and Auburn to Birmingham in the 1970s.

My first LSU game was them losing to state in Jackson. I was also there when Ole Miss beat them 32-0 on Halloween in the early 90s. I think both schools started putting money towards the on campus stadiums, plus the area around memorial stadium is pretty rough.

Jackson has big OM alumni base. OM would play a game or 2 a year there and Egg Bowl used to always be there. Stadium is old and in bad shape and in a horrible part of town. I did see Jerry Rice and Willie Totten play (MS Valley) against Jackson State there. That was a great game

Yep, the on campus stadium was smaller. MSU, UM and USM all played games there.
Actually had doubleheader games there too. UM vs LSU and MSU vs Bama one year. Hard to imagine that these days.

Saw Ole Miss vs Arkansas in Jackson.

Ole Miss and Miss St are both in very small towns, so most of the alumni base is at least a few hours from their home stadium. playing in Jackson gave a lot of alumni who otherwise couldn't make the trip to a game a chance to see the team play. They still play a baseball game every year in Jackson and the thing sells out in a couple of hours.
fwiw, Jackson is a heck of a lot closer to BR and NO than either of the campuses, so it would be a lot more convenient for LSU fans this weekend as well....

For a long time in the 80's and early 90's a double header between LSU, Ms. State, Ole Miss, and Alabama was played in Jackson. We used to get carloads from NE La. to go to the games. One in the afternoon and one at night. The teams changed up each year. Could buy tickets for each game, not 2. I loved it, the restaurants and bars would be full of fans. It was fun. They moved them to campus to sell more tickets and have the home game atmosphere. We went many times.

I was at Jerry Rice's last college football game at La Tech in 1984. Tech blew them out, but Rice was a man playing against boys.

saw LSU and OM there in the 80's when Arnsbarger was coach, LSU fans has 2/3 of the stadium covered

I went to a double header there in early 80s. LSU tied ole miss at end of the game and then State played Fla.

The score was 66 to 19 and Rice caught only 9 passes for 155 including getting knocked out.
Those were tough boys on that Tech squad.

If only you knew. '86 maybe '87 game...I won't bore you with the details (its a long story and if you search my post history, its there somewhere) but lets just say it is what fuels my hatred for all things Ole Piss!!!

My first year at LSU was 1969. I was in the band, and we made the trip to Jackson to play Ole Miss. We should have beat them, but we lost by a couple of points. That Archie Manning guy was too elusive. Defense would pressure him and he slipped away almost every time. Aggravating!
