Older baseball fans-please share your fav.memories of the box from the 60s & 70s

Older tiger baseball die-hards, basketball & football fans are always sharing their great memories of the pmac & tiger stadium from the 60s and 70s, but we never hear any great alex box stories from back then or even earlier. I know we have a lot of 50-60 year old life long tiger baseball fans on this board so please share some of your favorite memories from back then.

I can tell you that when I was 10 or so years old I used to sit with a friend in between the bushes behind the chain link fence in the outfield and cheer for my friend from baseball camp, left fielder Manny Mantrana.
80s, not 60s & 70s.

Did they have any fan seating back then.

You mean all twenty people who were actually in the stands, mostly the families and girlfriends of the players?

Jim Smith (coach in the 60s-70s) was our neighbor, but he wasn't a very good coach. They made a regional one time while he was coaching.
I'm frickin old but even I wasn't going to games back then. I started going in the 80s and it was sweet. You could sit anywhere and stretch out. There was nothing like a sunny afternoon of baseball at the old Box.

I played in two straight HS Championship games there. Had 3 hits in a losing cause as a senior.

Having been to a lot of the games at Alex Box during the Jim Smith years, marveling at all the changes when Bertman took over his first year was the best memory I have of those early years.
I'll never forget the first time I saw Skip come out of the dugout to argue a call with the home plate ump. That in itself was something that we hadn't seen during the Smith years, but when Skip won the argument and the ump changed the call we were stunned. "Who is this guy?"

i went to a game in late 70's...may have been 100 people in the crowd

I started going to games in '74. I got in free with my student ID. I doubt there was ever more than 200 folks in the stands, but we did win the SEC title in '75. That was fun!
I can't remember any names, but I'm sure I saw a few big leaguers pass thru. I can't even remember any tales that are interesting except the Box was pretty funky smelling. It only had the original grandstand behind home plate.

I went once probably late 70's. The game followed a LSU-Kentucky basketball game. a ticket to the basketball game got you into the baseball game free. LSU playing Ole Miss...Rebs had the Tigs down by 9-1...I left after the 7th inning. Tigs ended up beating the Rebs 10-9 in the 9th.

Lived in the married student apartments '79-'81. Baseball didn't draw much of a crowd back then.
The outfield fence along Nicholson was chain link with bushes behind it to shield view from the parking lot. Me and the buddies would get a six pack or two and the folding chairs and get between the bushes. You couldn't see much happening at home plate but really talk to the outfielders. It was great. Unfortunately, campus police didn't always agree with our idea of fun.

Late 70s, seem to remember seeing more pigeons than fans in attendance
