Yeah Sullivan was a crap choice as well though. I realize he had experience in the sec as a qb and oc, but he wasnt setting the world on fire at TCU. Man I'm glad LSU had changed on this front lol

The change can be fully attributed to Emmert.

ETA: Saban changed things on the field, but Emmert is responsible for the change in mindset which led to the results of the last 20 years.

First, Joe Dean was not very good as AD.

That said, Dinardo was SEC coach of
The year in 1991 and Vandy was a program that had won 10 games total over the previous 5 seasons prior to Gerry D arrival.

He had credibility given the ability to win w no talent at Vandy and was thought to be able to right the ship here. LSU’s record was so poor under Curley we weren’t exactly getting high interest from top shelf coaches.

All in all, I think if he had ditched Tepper he probably could have rebounded and been here for a bit longer. He wouldn’t have gotten us to a National Title, but back then that seemed like a goal we may never experience.

I still have overall good feelings about him as he reminded everyone what LSU football is and took us out of the cellar. Getting Faulk here was a program shifter and allowed Saban to see the potential of LSU.

He was what I like to refer to as the “starter wife” for building what was to come.

With good reason. A lot happened in those 5 years.

I wouldn't go that far.
Of course it was.

Simple answer is he was hired to "Bring Back The Magic" I think that was the campaign they ran when he was hired.

As others said, he showed that we could get instate recruits and be good, so in a way he accomplished bringing back the magic.

I've dreamed of making my own 30 for 30/sec storied chronicling the time between curley's firing and sabans arrival called "The False Spring of Gerry Dinardo."

The Better question is why the hell did LSU hire Mike Archer when they could have had Steve Spurrier!

Yeah, if Dinardo wasn't so stubborn keeping Tepper around, he wouldn't have been fired. We would have been comptetative with him, and he was a good recruiter. However, he never would have been the guy to take us to the next level either. He might have been able to be in the Tommy Tubberville tier of coaches.

ONE MILLION PERCENT accurate. To all the fans enjoying our last 21 years, The SINGLE most important person responsible for that is Mark Emmert. He gets shite on by the media because he's successful and is hesitant to fund the lesbian and other minor sports, who as a collective are a FINANCIAL DRAIN on the bottom line. But without him there is no Saban, and no golden era up to and including the greatest season ever (2019) in college football history.

I think it goes deeper than that. Saban seems to get 90 to 100 percent of the credit for a turnaround job that was at least half Dinardo's - if not more. Now, it is arguable that it is easier to take LSU from where Dinardo's predecessor left it to where Saban picked up than over those final obstacles. I mean, an empty chair would have been a better coach than we had between Archer and Dinardo.

But, regardless, folks seem to (conveniently?) forget how bad we were when Dinardo took over and how talented a team was there for Saban to begin with.
