Just watched the LSU game in the Ole Miss season in 60 on SECN. So it is the Ole Miss highlights from the game. There was one play which cause me to take a huge step back in my expectations for this season. It is just one play, but it is a way to common mistake for such a huge football program, talented football team, and well compensated coaching staff to make.

It caused me to question my expectations for this season, There is a cycle for expectations that seems to repeat itself every year.

This is how it seems to go pretty much every year.

1. End of Season: End disappointing season. November loss to Bama, and embarrassing ones (Ole Miss, Arkansas, maybe a bowl loss). Overall fed up with Les Miles's inability to develop QB, provide effective play calling, and field a focused and prepared team. Some optimism for next season due to returning players and rising underclassmen. Sometimes optimism from convincing bowl win.

2. Spring: Solid recruiting lots of class among top in country, (this year juniors returning) buzz coming from spring practice, coaching changes/adjustments to give optimism

3. Late summer/fall: Hearing great things from practice. Stacked squad. Freshmen and new contributors are ready to make big impact. Arguably some of the best units in conference at position groups, fixes to previous year problems. Expectations very high.

4. Season: Team doesn't start off like I expected. Similar issues coming up as previous season - Passing attack and making stupid mistakes. But LSU wins, and at times looks capable of brilliance with the talent. Late in season, (into 1. End of Season) I am wondering how Les still has a job because this is the most poorly coached group of elite athletes ever

This seems to be almost every year for me. The key is that as the season approaches and expectations are sky-high, I forget the experiences and feelings from late in the previous season, most of which have to do with very questionable (to put it light) coaching.

It is the same this year. I am so psyched. Team is stacked in every way. Highest expectations I have ever had. I would think 1-RB, 1-DB, top in country, DL, WR, OL are possibly top 10 units in country; Juniors returning, freshmen ready to contribute, Valentine bonus. Aranda, Craig, returning coach O, Cam on the field, coaching adjustments hopefully will fix issues. Stacked. National media expectations are skyrocketing now.

BUT - I just saw some of the Old Miss game and I remembered. I read some of my texts from that game. At that point last season, I said there was no way Miles was coming back. It was such an embarrassing performance. I really like Les, but it baffled me how a man could be paid so much to coach such a poorly coached team.

This is the play that sparked this novel (sorry, I went crazy, hopefully someone reads it) In a key play deep in the red zone, LSU took a timeout because they couldn't get the play in. After the timeout, they ran a busted play.

The whole game was like this. Overall, the offense and QB just look lost way too much. This is late in the season too. With the same OC for years. There have been way to many examples of plays and games like this throughout his 10 years.

So while I am pumped to watch arguably the most talented and experienced LSU squad in history, after watching that Ole Miss game from last year, I would absolutely hate for what I see as historically talented team with a once in a generation talent to be ruined by similar plays.

Pulitzer please

Jesus....way to take the wind out my sail. We have had a lot of 1st year starting quarterbacks as of late. Ryan perriloux literally screwed us by being a dumbass and causing freshman startings QBs . Now the QB recruiting has been a bit lackluster but mettenburger was good his last year , and I feel Brandon will be improved. I still won't expect him to set the SEC on fire but he will put us in a position to win games this year . Imo

I agree with pretty much everything except the opinion that we might have a top 10 OL. Last year the same thing was said. "One of the best OLs in the country." They were absolutely manhandled in the back end of the season. I think they'll be a bit better but nowhere near top 10 better.

This is the problem. We fans are fanatics, right, so we obsess and we try to be objective but we really have unrealistic, grandiose expectations year after year after year regardless of what reality and history have tried to teach us time and time again. Occasionally, the team we "knew" was going to be so great actually meets our lofty expectations and then our sense of reality is even more fricked up than it was before. I love football.

Totally. I actually thought about going on another tangent about bias. So here it is:

I think I am a generally objective person, or I am able to be when I try. But the more passionate I am about something, the tougher it becomes. LSU football is at the top of that list.

There are a dozen losses I can blaim on poor officiating, but I don't remember games that LSU won because of some bad officiating.

One that comes up most is UGA '09 (because I live in Atlanta) when AJ Greene was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. I try to see it neutral, but I don't think I can. Yes it was a bad call. But Scott was flagged for the exact same thing. Difference is LSU took advantage, still needed the 25-ish rd Holiday return and 40-ish yd Scott TD run. UGA did nothing with their unsporstmanlike after that run.

Point is, that is a game UGA fans still bring up about bad reffing. I can't see it as that bad at all, but it is the first one I can think of when I think of a bad call helping LSU. I could think of 10 games in 2 minutes where bad calls cost LSU the game. (*i just remembered aTm offsides)

So it is tough for me to be objective with LSU even when I try.

What I find much worse is my criticism for our coaching. This is the same for most teams I support, but again far worse for LSU and poor Les. Every bad coaching decision is noticed, pointed out loudly, and filed away. This makes LSU honestly seem like the worst coached team in all of sports to me. Seriously. Now, of course I know that's not true. But I can't think of a team that is more poorly coached than LSU when I think of the Ole Miss game or 10 others like it.

Doesn't mean it's untrue.

Obviously we have missed on a few recruits as well ...

This right here is a big contributor to the annual flop from the very top of high expectations for the greatest team ever to the lowest low of total catastrophe.

There was a thread comparing the 2011 defense to the 2016 defense. https://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/lsu-sports/2011-defense-vs-2016-defense/64896881/If you think this is the most talented and experienced LSU squad in history then prepare to go full cycle on the expectations/reality curve and for it to last well into the real season.
