They’d have the option to give the ball back to the opposition and have them start at the 25 yard line OR run one more play from its own 25 line and if they gain 15 yards, they keep the ball. Essentially it’s a 4th and 15 play.

Imagine if college football had this rule while LSU had Burrow. We would’ve scored 70+ in most games!

Well its basically 4th and 15 from the 25.. so depending on the outcome of the play.. somewhere between the 25 and 39

Wherever the ball is after you run your play.

I like the concept. A fourth and 15 play would be much more exciting than an onsides kick.

ETA: The one downside is the squabbling that will be had over Pass Interference calls / no-Calls on that play.

So they’ll just be able to underthrow a deep ball and get PI called

How dumb.

First of all, there's really no such thing as an "onside kick" in terms of the rules. For any free kick (including kickoffs), the ball is live after it travels 10 yards. The kicking team just can't advance it if they recover.

The rules are the same if the kick dies at the 1 or at the 45 (or 10 yards beyond the LOS). If the receiving team doesn't take possession of the ball, it is still live. Anyone on the kicking team trying to take possession of the ball must have started in-line or behind the kicker (thus "on side") if they touch the ball first.

4th and 15 isn't enough for me to like the rule. 4th and 20 maybe..

If this ends up gaining traction I think it should be from the 15. Basically make the play or concede at minimum a field goal

That's kinda dumb. I have to imagine the success rate of one 15 yard play would be much higher than an onside kick.

I feel like this would actually increase the amount of onside kicks.

Team lines up to kickoff. Receiving team assumes no onside kick because the smarter move would be to try the play at the 25. Team kicking off surprises receiving team with onside kick. I could see the Pat McAfee recovering becoming a viable option.

guessing any defensive penalty besides offsides would result in a first down and they'd keep the ball

I mean, it seems obvious that they would no longer have the option to onside kick. This 15 yard play would replace that.

Yea, if it's replaced completely then disregard that.

Increasing the success rate even more.

Seems like just an easy ploy to increase scoring. I don't like it at face value and hope it just stays at the pro bowl.
