Before the year, most thought the pitching would carry us and the hitting would struggle.

In reality for the most part the opposite has been true.

Until the ND games yesterday.

Good sign that multiple pitchers stepped up.

Bad sign that most hitters struggled against mediocre pitching from a mid-lower level ACC team.

I don't put too much emphasis on the games yesterday. There rarely is much enthusiasm shown for mid-week games this time of year, plus a double header, seemed to make for a "lets get this over with and get to Knoxville" approach. I'm confident that the Tigers will be better this weekend.

I missed game one but caught most of game two. Before the last inning near meltdown, I was actually thinking the same thing.

Literally the last game before the Notre Dame trip.

This team seems more focused at the plate when facing top pitching. The stats back that up. Whether you believe it or not

What crawled up Riley Smith's arse these last 2 outings?

He had an ERA of 16.2 with 6.2 IP 12H 12ER before the Arkansas game.

Dude has gone 8 straight scoreless innings now.

midweek games
cloudy overcast wind blowing in
infield turf that makes it hard for grounders to get through
neither team hit in those conditions
you still won two
umps were so so

good news is valek and smith look capable of pitching in a regional as a starter
that was an ACC opponent not typical mid week fare

the longer i'm around baseball the less I understand team hitting and team pitching. sometimes the bats go cold. usually that's due to the opposing pitcher having good stuff that day and probably the ump having a generous zone.

but, as a whole, trying to determine why a team doesn't hit well over several games is pure speculation.
