NCAA Scholarship Limits Reasoning

What is the reasoning behind 11.7 scholarship numbers in baseball? Why not 12? Why not 15?
Cross Country gets 12.6. Basketball gets 13.
Who comes up with this? I know there has to be a limit but just curious.

This was determined a long time ago when baseball wasn't popular at all (25 years or so). Now baseball is very much on tv all the time.
I honestly believe with the emergence of other new NCAA sports Baseball will be one of the first to get more scholarships. 11.7 scholarships for 35 roster spots is absolutely an abomination with how big college baseball has gotten now. It should be at minimum 25.

Someone once had a one-armed, one-legged catcher and he got a full ride. So it was a .7 scholarship.

Only rich kids play baseball. They don't need scholarships.

Unfortunately, I disagree with you on the fact of "how big college baseball has gotten."
However, I do agree that they should get a lot more scholarships. Would be nice to have 5 or 6 more total to pass around to players.

Thunderbird1100, thanks. Makes sense with so many kids not staying the full 4 years we should at least have more than 11.7. I could see at least 18.

Imagine if baseball got the full 35, how many draft picks would come to college and improve the overall game
pipe dream

This plays a big part due to revenue stream. Remember, when they determined baseball should get only 11.7 scholarship the most you could see of baseball on tv was the national title pretty much. Now we're upset when we miss a few games on tv/stream in a whole season.

Limited scholarships allow northern and midwestern teams an opportunity to compete as well. If southern and western teams are limited in the amount of scholarships available then some kids will sign with a school in the Big 10 or some other conference when they would rather play in the SEC or Pac 12

Softball gets 12. I think they should get more, too.

It's gotten bigger, but it's still under the radar for most sports fans across the country. I think each conference having their own networks is helping people get into it more even if it is cutting down a little on stadium sales. Certainly seems to be headed in the right direction. TD Ameritrade hasn't exactly helped the average fan to get into college baseball.

Because Title IX
this is the answer. every conference had to appease the legal aspect of the number of men's vs womens schollies. since football takes so many scollies, other men's sports took a hit. compromises were made but the number of schollies is very close to even between the sexes with the ladies fielding more sports.

LSU dropped wrestling and mens's gymnastics both of which had been very successful prior to Title IX.

Not saying everyone is as rabid as we are but the point is not only for us but most everyone can now watch their team one way or another for most games. It has gotten popular enough they are televising most games. If not enough people cared, they wouldn't throw it on tv.
The next step to helping college baseball popularity is to move the tournament away from TD Ameritrade and the ridiculous dimensions there.

It's been around a lot longer than that.

this mostly just applies to southern teams. Go try to find a Big 10 game in TV
