wow...I feel like such a bad fan now....

I forgot all about the skyler green catch and I was there.

I remember being so pissed when the UGA RB took a screen 90 yards to the house to take the lead

That's easy, then. Every day on the Rant.

Jamie Howard's final interception in the 1994 loss to Auburn.

Didn't define LSU, but certainly defined the Hallman years.

god...my memory sucks.

That's right. It tied it 10-10.

I also remember their All-SEC kicker missing like 3 FGs

Some people think it was during the NC year. I hear commentators make this mistake a lot.

Hell, I've heard Paul Dietzel himself make this mistake!

I don't think there's just one defining moment, seems to me there's been a few, each in different eras and time periods. But over the past 30-40 years, I'd have to say the 2003 NC was number one:

• It put us back in the national spotlight and among the nation's elite sports programs, and we're still there six years later

I mean no disrespect to the baseball program which, over a 10-year period, DEFINED the words "sports dynasty" as well as any college team in any sport ever has. In fact, you could call their 10-year run not a defining moment, but a defining decade, which gives you a real perspective on how extraordinary their accomplishments were. But for better or worse, football dominates in terms of recognition, publicity, etc., and the 2003 NC set us up as one of the nation's elite sports schools in the present era.

8. Billy Cannon's 59 punt return vs Ole Miss
Really the only choice, imo. LSU football became a different animal in that era, most singularly due to the efforts of Billy Cannon. And obviously that play was the defining moment of Cannon's LSU career. There is a reason that one play -- grainy, shitty-quality old black and white footage and all -- is still shown more often than any other moment in LSU sports history.

Hiring Bob Broadhead as Atheletic Director turned LSU into a national power house in sports (track, football, baseball, etc)

Mostly because that one play won the game and put LSU football in the major national spotlight. That was our first real big game of the year, college gameday was there, record crowd, all the eyes in the nation were on LSU. and we came up big that day. to me that play represents the ascending of LSU to a national powerhouse.

5. W. Morris walk off home run
This gets my vote. The NC was snatched from the jaws of defeat by a guy who missed most of the season with an injury.

1. Billy Cannon halfback pass TD to win 1958 National Championship

Had nothing to do with the NC. At that time, NC's were named before the bowls. All that play did was win the Sugar Bowl.

I don't think there is any particular "defining moment" in Tiger sports.

However, the event(s) which have had the most far-reaching effects were Dietzel's innovation of the 3 team substitution system, Alvin Roy and Billy Cannon's weight training program and Cannon's subsequent 89 yd. pr and Heisman.

Those three occurences taken together completely changed the face of college fb.

At the time Dietzel implemented his system, players were allowed to come in only once a quarter, thus forcing the best players to play both ways for longer periods of time. When he put in the system, it allowed for more liberal substitution and eventually led to most of the sub rules we have today.

Before BC and AR began weight training, most, if not all, colleges and even the pros had no program at all. Not even year round training as now. BC was the first player to ever really use weight and conditioning training and it was partially this training that led to his being able to make the punt return, breaking tackles and using his speed.

Without these innovations, LSU would not have that '58 skin on its wall. And as a result, college fb teams all over the land began to change the way they practiced and trained. It eventually spread to the pros as well.

Also a little known fact is that Dr. Marty Broussard, LSU's long time trainer, is actually the inventor of "Gatorade". He developed it and shared it with his fellow trainers and the sorry bastards from Gainesville profited from it. Supposedly, Dr. Broussard's mixture didn't taste very good and the Fla. trainers developed it to what it later became.

Absolutely the Billy Cannon run back. It's the LSU moment seen by more people for 50 years this fall.

That'll mean there will be 50 years worth of fans all around the USA, not just in BR.

And don't forget the movie "Everybody's All American", based on the Cannon legend---a legend created by that run back.
