we didn't even run the pistol, did we?

we were in the pistol on Fournettes 83 yard run. Harris was lined up about 5 yards back with Fournette lined up just beside and back of Harris. Jeter was lined up in the backfield behind the tackle. Jeter came across taking the lead blocker role like a fullback and Harris just directly handed off to Fournette as you would on a dive play. It was a power run play out of a formation that spreads the defense out a little more, makes it easier to throw from and gives the d more to think about.

Is that formation usually referred to as the Pistol? I thought the Pistol had the RB behind the QB, and the QB halfway between where he would be in a Shotgun formation. Maybe that's just semantics, but that is was the traditional setup that Crowton ran a lot of.

We are diversifying, and not only was it a sight for sore eyes it's just what the doctor ordered.

I am more positive about the direction of the program than I have been in quite a while.

I hate that Moore is hurt, but I think this creates more opportunities for the passing game and spreading everything out. I'm very curious to see what happens.

If you mean the 87 yard run - second play of the second half - that was not the pistol formation. It was more of a spread - LF was off to Harris's right and just a bit back. The play started as a fake speed option right, then LF came back to take the handoff on a counter.

just semantics. Call it what you want. If I call it a shotgun you can be sure that the 'in the know' smartasses are going to show up and argue like hell it was a pistol because the QB was 5 yards back instead of 7 and the RB was a little bit behind him. To me it's all shotgun but it really doesn't matter. The important part is the QB wasn't under center and we weren't lined up in an I.

I realize that formation and philosophy aren't the same thing, but our line isn't cut out for a "spread" attack, at least in the traditional sense. They are big and physical. They are all pretty athletic for their size, but there is a reason that spread and spread option offenses usually recruit smaller, faster linemen.

I really haven't seen many posters on this board looking for an all out spread offense in the mold of a TCU or Baylor. You can still be a run heavy offense out of the shotgun formation, give the RB's more room to run, and make it easier on the passing game. Just an offense pretty much like we ran against S Carolina but more fully developed, as it would be the more we actually do it.

By the time we ran like a beast south Carolina had been worn down. We would have ran like a beast in any formation and personnel at that point.

All I know is I like it....and if you polled the players they'd prolly say they like it too. Whatever we can do to create space for LF only helps his cause rather than relying on him to run thru a brick wall on every play.
