Meh, very worst case in my opinion would be to rescue a tiger from an inferior zoo habitat from somewhere around the world. There are thousands of tigers in poor captive conditions and even SJW's can see that our facilities and care are world class.

You give these idiots too much credit. They prob believe our vets went down to India or Thailand or something and snatched a tiger cub from its mother's tit.

LSU rescued Roscoe from big cats of Indiana, which still closed down after our donation. So he was going to go somewhere else, may as well be somewhere he would get his own personal vet. Yet people act like we should just release him in the wild. Forget the fact he was born in captivity.

It's probably safe to assume this will be our last tiger? Regardless of how long he has left?

I personally believe that, given the world-class habitat and the vet care that Mikes get, there is a great case for continuing the live mascot tradition at LSU. I'll sure speak out and fight for it.

However, the overgrown frat boys and other idiots bitching, moaning, and demanding that Mikes continue to be stuffed in that tiny trailer and paraded around--where you can't tell if there's a tiger or an aardvark in that cage unless you are right on top of it--may have already ensured that Mike VI is the last tiger to live in that habitat.

People need to be thankful we have a live tiger on campus and realize "traditions" such as parading him around at football games in a tiny cage are outmoded and obsolete.

Way to generalize a group of people. A very very small portion of the LSU community I might add.

I agree with your statements. Just not in singling out less than 20% of people that attend LSU.

Prayers Sent to Mike.

We have a family cat who also had carcinoma. We got surgery for him followed by radiation therapy for 30 straight days. He made it and has been cancer free for several years. It cost us a fortune but, it was worth it. I assume this must be a similar treatment but in a higher dose since he is such a large, strong animal.

One side note, following the radiation treatment when his fur returned to that area it was silver.

Very informative follow-up article with new information:

1) Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center will be absorbing the cost for Mike's treatment.

2) According to Dr. Baker, the three days recovery time for Mike to come out of the anesthesia for his examination suggests "fragility of the kidneys." He may not survive the anesthesia. So much for the yahoos hollering: "anesthetize him and load him up for the football games!"

3) This could be meaningless, but the tone of the article suggests that a Mike VII will be a given, if and when Mike VI dies:

"Ernie Ballard, a university spokesman, said it's too early to be talking about replacing Mike with another tiger. But he said ultimately Baker would let university leadership know about Mike's condition and officials would form a plan if it turns out Mike's condition is critical.

"The past three tigers were donated, he said, and the hope is that any future live mascots would also be donated by tiger sanctuaries."

How dare you violate Mike's HIPAA rights with this article. Im just gonna say it- you're racist and doing this because he's a Bengal.

And spare me the "some of my best friends are Bengals" argument, because we both know that isn't true.

That article causes concern about the anesthesia. Doesn't sound terribly promising.

I agree it is a concern. Doesn't sound like there is any alternative. I hope he handles the anesthesia, responds well to treatment, and lives another couple years, which indeed would be another 15-20 percent of his life--significant.

However, he may not survive going under general anesthesia again. That would be sad, and means he would be with us maybe no more than another month, depending on when they decide to treat him.

If his kidneys are already fragile, he may have already been declining.

I'm not a doctor/vet, but I would think the sooner he gets the treatment, the better. Also, based on what I've read, if the treatment can be done in one episode, the better his chances are.

You know, there are 2 young tigers at the BR Zoo. They probably don't have room for both.

Maybe retire this Mike to a larger refuge and see if we can get one of the BR Zoo cubs?

no way. We aren't just going to abandon him when he needs us most.

There is no way the vet or the vet school will send Mike away at this point. That's not an option, thankfully. They will care for him until his last breath.
