Maybe Dalebrown could give PM some of his literature

I am going to take this thread in a different route.

Is Ott pitching well ..no

When did he start pitching poorly?

Remember back to last year when the ptiching staff as a whole was struggling and everyone on the rant wanted Ott to be moved to a starting role. Damn near every arse clown on this board wanted this.

Ott pitches 7 innings giving up 2 runs as we beat Bama in extra innings. Up until this point Ott has 11 saves on the year. He gets the win in this game.

The next week Florida is drilling our pitching so the rant gets their wish and CPM starts Ott. He goes 3.2 innings and give up 9 earned runs on 8 hits in a loss.

He nexts pitches against Vandy 2 innings giving up 1 earned run on 2 hits. Blowing a save but getting the win because we win it late.

He does not have a save the rest of the season.

I may be wrong but I am going to say that whatever has happened to Matty those two games were the turning point.

Essentially what I am trying to say is Fridays loss is the Rants fault for making Matty a starter.

See what I did there.

P, I'm not ready to throw in the towel on Matty just yet but after yesterdays little outing I think it's painfully obvious that his head is effed up. After he gave up the HR Friday night he had an "oh shite" look on his face the rest of the time. This game can be a rotten whore at times. Maybe he's in dire need of a Susan Sarandon sized slump buster.

No I am not saying to give up on Ott.

We need Ott to be the closer. I am not sure what is going on. He is lacking his out pitch. Every guys he faces he gets 2 strikes on, then he throws a big fat meatball.

My point was those long outings in midseason 2010 is where his tide turned. My guess would be he got a sore arm or maybe a tweek but continued to pitch and now he has a head issue due to the continued beatings.

Or it could be another Justin Meyer, or Justin Vincent. After his freshamn year they were never the same. Lost mojo is hard to find in the game of baseball.

Oh I know.

This is what's puzzling. Pitches that should be 0-2 waste pitches are in the fat part of the zone. That's just lack of concentration.

I'm with you on this. He hasn't been the same since.

Hell, at LSU this isn't even necessary. There's basically of buffet of cleat chasers that are more than willing. I think Ott has a pretty serious girlfriend though. Maybe she'd be willing to take one for the team so to speak.

I cringe when I see Ott come in now with a 1 run lead. 2 years ago it would have been game over. Not so much anymore.

Matty has success going against teams that havent seen him before. Which is also why he isnt good for more than a couple of innings.

When his FB loses its movement he is toast. Teams will stay away from his slider and curveball when he does throw for strikes. He is not the Coleman we hoped him to become but is a very good situational pitcher when batters havent seen his stuff before.

This is one major problem I has with CPM and Grewe. They do not believe in waste pitches. An 0-2 pitch needs to be eye level, in the dirty or 6 inches off the plate.

Im sorry Ott is not going to sneek an 0-2 fastball past anyone even if it is low in the zone.

The coaches do this all the time. They did it with Alsup yesterday. He throw a fastaball and a change on the outside corner for strikes. Ty Ross setsup on the inside and Alsup gets it a little to much over the plate and it gets hit.

After 2 stikes on the outside corner, a fastball 6 inches off is a good setup pitch for a 1-2 pitch on the inside.

Very

Maybe it is just me.

My guess on this is Grewe.. Ott isnt alone on the pitching staff in serving 0-2 meatballs.

You must have loved it Friday when we did this 3 times. It was maddening 0-2 nobody on base serve up a screamer because you just served up a nice fat pitch down the center of the plate.

It has been happening for years. Last year our pitching was so bad I figured it was pitchers making mistakes. But if you look at this year I would say 75% of the hits given up are on 2 stike counts. I know batters are looking to hit with 2 stikes but if you got a guy 0-2 he should be expecting and getting junk. Instead we serve up meatballs.

Yep. Ross has been pretty good defensively too so there's really no reason not throw a nasty slider/sinker/whatever in the dirt and see what happens. It's definitley a philosophy thing by Grewe because if you remember Ranaudo and Coleman didn't really throw waste pitches either.

I think the book is out around the SEC on Matty: if you can lay off that biting slider out of the strike zone and force him to throw his fastball (mediocre at best) for strikes, he's toast. If he's not getting movement on that slider, it hangs up in the zone and he's toast. No other breaking pitches, and without a decent fastball to set it up, no changeup.
