Great insight this thread. He's tried to steal, and hasn't looked good doing it. I think the coaches are working with him, but as others have said, he hasn't read the pitchers well, and hasn't finished well. Lots of little things go into it, that time will fix. Coaches haven't forced it on him, as the guys behind him are killing it, and we are scoring. Bregman isn't as fast, but he's looks great at stealing bases..for a comparison, and they are letting him run, with decent hitters behind him.....

PurpleandGold, I get what you're saying. I have only watched a handful of games, that's why I asked. Thanks for the insight and I'm sure he will get better as well.

Right, Bregman is 5 out of 5 this year in stolen base attempts. It's all about getting a good jump off the pitcher and feeling comfortable getting an extra step or two on your lead. Also, PM isn't a huge base stealing guy anyway right? He likes to lay more bunts down. I would love to see some hit and runs with Bregman and Laird until Laird can improve his ability to get a great jump on the pitcher. Bregman has proven he has the ability to handle the bat well and can hit the ball the other way. Putting that runner in motion is going to open up more holes and get guys out of position while Bregman swings away.

I'm all for this too, especially as well as Bregman and Rhymes handle the bat. They won't leave him out to dry and maybe that is what he needs to get his confidence on the bases up.

He also hit into a triple play. Can we fire him?

He does have a lot to learn when it comes to reading pitchers, but I don't think that he is very quick off of the line. He's fast, but takes a couple of steps to get up to speed. He takes a long stride, which allows him to cover a lot of ground in the outfield. The two times that he's been thrown out, he got terrible jumps, but it's as if his first couple of steps are to get out of a hole.

I agree. He is the fastest guy we have from 1st to 3rd by a lot, but he might not be the fastest guy from 1st to 2nd. When you add the issues getting a read on the pitcher, it makes sense.

Im fine with him not stealing until he learns how to read pitchers or his spot in the batting order changes. Hitting in front of katz, rhymes, and bregs, he shouldnt have to steal alot of bases

Mainieri on this situation in yesterday's Reveille:

LSU coach Paul Mainieri said of all the aspects of Laird’s game, his base running needs the most improvement. Laird has one successful stolen base out of three attempts this season.

Mainieri said Laird will have to work on getting better jumps and turning around bases, but he is optimistic that when Laird returns in the fall after playing summer ball, he will have improved.

“I think by next year, he’ll be an outstanding base stealer,” Mainieri said. “I don’t know that he’ll be a great base stealer this year.”

When he's on first almost every time the pitcher starts his motion, Laird heads back towards the bag. Then he realizes the pitcher is going home with the pitch and Laird takes a few steps towards second base.

I wouldn't know for sure but they may be telling him to take a one way lead. With a one way lead the runner always makes his first move back to the bag when the P begins his wind-up. This is mostly used with lefties or any P w/ a good move. It can also be used when you have good hitters behind the runner and you want him playing it safe so they get a chance to drive him in.
