Are we really banking on Latz to start v. the 4 seed next week?

It'll work out fine against Navy or whoever the frick comes here, but I worry about us going back to Omaha without a third starter. WE NEED THAT to have a prayer of winning number 7.

Unless Latz finds 6 innings worth of stamina over the next week, I'd rather we make Smith or Gilbert the 3rd starter and see where that takes us.

I'm not sure what the gameplan is with Latz. I had no problem starting him this week, but no way he'd be able to go 5 innings on Thur/Fri.

Norman has disappeared. Smith is coming on strong. Gilbert is better out of the pen. Valek might be that "only if we have to" starter.

I'd go:

REGIONAL
Game 1: Latz/Smith
Game 2: Lange
Game 3: Poche
Game 4 (if nec): Norman

SUPER
Game 1: Lange
Game 2: Poche
Game 3: Latz

This will likely be quickly shot to hell when we announce our Sat starter this week.

And that's really why I made this thread... For Mainieri to give him the start, albeit for 2 innings, on Tuesday, they must feel like they can turn him into the third starter by the Supers.

It just wouldn't make any sense to thrust him into that spot otherwise.

It really depends on the type of 4 seed we get. As of right now, it looks like there will be a bunch of salty ones. Even is LSU sneaks in as a national seed, they'll likely get a dangerous 4 seed.

Truthfully, if we get to a game 3 in Supers, I want him on the mound if he's 100%.

None of the 4 seeds will be any better than Tennessee.

I don't think so. I could see us starting Valek just because he throws strikes. Or Smith just because he throws hard, something a 4 wouldn't see often. It will be an interesting decision.

But do you want him if he can only go 3 or 4 innings with probably a depleted pen behind that?

Yes. I'd rather him than any other leftovers. Start him. Let him take you as far as he reasonably can, then see if you can't get some magic out of someone like Stallings or Bain again. It's going to have to happen at some point. One of the typical "OMG, Not him!" guys is going to have to show up. Look at this week. Stallings and Pap are why we are where we are doing things that aren't typical.

I was hoping that moment would be Tuesday, but they pulled him after just throwing 25 pitches or whatever it was.

I just don't want another scenario where we're starting Zac Person in a do or die situation in Omaha.

I mean, that's not true at all. Tennessee was horrible.

Some of these 4 seeds have legit aces that will need to be taken seriously.

Tennessee has legit pitching...

You're overrating these mid-majors because they beat up on weak conference opponents. Talent-wise top to bottom, the four seed we get will be at or below a below average sec team.

No, I'm not overrating them. I am saying that we could get a decent one with a legit ace. It's a one game situation.

Surely, you're not suggesting Poche or even Lange starts if we get matched up with these aces.

I am not suggesting anything because I have no idea who LSU is playing yet.

Example: Teams like Seattle and Fresno State are said to have good pro pitching prospects. They are slated to be 4 seeds, and a quite a few West Coast teams are headed East this year if only one West regional is given.

If we get a nat seed, we could get the swac champion or someone similar. The 2s and 3s are for the good midmajors. Let's not pretend that the teams that someone win their crap conference tournaments and have a 120 RPI are going to come up with anything that we should even consider throwing Lange or Poche for.

So lets say LSU gets Seattle with Meservey starting... Who are you throwing?

I haven't looked at their lineup but it may depend on matchups and how Smith looks Saturday.

It's Mainieri, not me. Who you or I would start means shite. Paul could think Poche for all we know.

ETA: I think the Latz plan is likely to happen though. Three or more innings followed by game-situation for relievers.

Because we may luck into a really shitty or somewhat dangerous 4 seed. It may lead to Gilbert and wholestaff starting. If CPM values Latz like we think, he may not want to "waste" him on a Princeton or Navy. It does depend on the opponent.
