your blind homerism for the Astros is seriously clouding your judgment to the point where you're coming off worse than the sunshine pumpers who never take their purple and gold glasses off

and when he walks, they lose their #1 pick

If the Astros' final offer to Aiken is sincerely $3.1, I can almost promise you he will walk. By the time he is eligible for the draft after college, the top 5 picks will be slotted at least that much money. And if this kid is as good as they say he is, he has all the ability to get right back there.

And if they lost the 1st round pick to drop to the 2nd round pick because they were too stubborn to offer merely half of Aiken's slot, they are going to get a lot of heat from their fans and I would consider that move incredibly stupid.

2nd pick not 2nd round.
If they don't offer Aiken more than 3.1 that is because he has a legitimate injury at which point I would be okay with them walking away.
If he even signs for 4.5 million, the Astros can still offer Marshall close to 3 million (which would be enough to convince him to sign). Which means if the Astros don't budge on the 3.1 million offer, it's because something is seriously wrong.

The Astros haven't done shite wrong. Close is just being a bitch because he is about to lose half a million bucks.
I still don't think Mac signs, but I'll be nervous as shite when Aiken leaves the door open for a couple extra million by signing for under 5

The Astros, Close said, made one revised offer to Aiken of $3,168,840 million - the minimum amount required to ensure that they would receive the second overall pick of the 2015 draft as compensation if they failed to sign Aiken.
Is this written incorrectly? I thought if they didn't sign him they would lose the 1st round pick next year. Or am I wrong?

Only if they don't make a legitimate effort to sign him.

i think the stipulation is that if the Astros negotiate in good faith but can't sign their pick, then they'll get compensated, so that number may be the minimum to be considered a good faith offer

You get a 1st round pick, not lose the pick
Posted on 7/15/14 at 11:01 am to LSU=Champions
If a player is injured, you can offer him 40% of slot value and receive an equal pick next year as compensation.

This is just me, but knowing the kid liked to do Crossfit would have raised injury concerns in my mind before the draft.

Gotcha. Thanks to all 4 of you for answering and being more knowledgable about it than me.

Cliff notes please.
Does Aiken signing for less than he expected increase the chances of the Astros bumping their offer and signing Marshall?
Thanks.

Supposedly that was his number before the draft.

If the Astros sign Aiken, LSU should be worried.
It's appearing to me that Aiken will not get close to what he was expected to get. Thus, anything he signs (if he does), will be very low in relation to his slot $3.1 mil - $5 mil and will afford the Astros with some serious bankroll to throw at Mac.
I think the best case and most likely case is for the Astros to stay firm in their $3.1 offer and Aiken takes the college route.
