Maason Smith is a DT prospect in the 2024 draft class. He scored an unofficial 9.40 #RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 98 out of 1620 DT from 1987 to 2024.

That was without shuttle or 3-come results. The same account with full combine results:

Maason Smith is a DT prospect in the 2024 draft class. He scored an unofficial 8.99 #RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 164 out of 1620 DT from 1987 to 2024.

And that is without bench press results. If you add his bench press from today his RAS goes down to 8.47:

I’m not saying 8.47 is bad but it’s a hell of a lot different than the 9.40 you threw out there.

ETA: NFL.com has him with the 8th best athleticism score among DTs in this draft class, without accounting for his bench results. That score would be lower had he benched at the combine.

No, just someone who trains and knows that there is zero excuse for him to bench 225 22 times at that size, being at LSU.

I don’t get it. What’s the case for a second round grade??

NFL reporter said Smith was continually talked up by NFL personnel and has a top 50 grade on some rankings. The people on here hating on him have always been hilariously wrong, he would’ve blown shite up next year if he came back.

He played in a garbage scheme coming back from a major injury and people here jump to idiotic opinions from that.

Athletic 6’6” 315 lb DT. Guys like smith don’t grown on trees. Everyone looking for the next Chris Jones.

I think people are going to be surprised with Him. He basically didn’t have a DL coach last year. I bet know one in this board thought Danielle Hunter would put up borderline HOF numbers when he declared.

That's a solid argument, I guess...for the lack of production on the field. Neither did much. In fact, Maason did more early on.

Danielle did a TON on the field at LSU. Casual fans who don’t understand the game are only looking at sacks, though.

Smith got bad advice... he should have stayed another year, as Pete Jenkins recommended to him

Sounds like he got good advice and chose not to follow it. Not listening to Coach Pete is idiotic.

For what...a Kristy Kreme server of donuts. Like I have said, you would argue with a wall. Now, come up with some patronizing, irrelevant football technical term to try to make your post look credible. Let me throw a quote your way. ""Lies, damned lies, and statistics" is a phrase describing the persuasive power of statistics to bolster weak arguments"

I have to say...you are the absolute worst poster on this forum and that is saying something! Oh, and let me finish with your standard ending... "lol"

Can you explain to me what last years "Scheme" was? I keep hearing this phrase passed around, and yet no one can explain it to me.

Bro, he played DT. There is no scheme besides pass rush or gap to stop the run. Ya'll act like Smith was terrible because House was calling for LBs to Blitz while Smith was in coverage.

And the idiotic opinions are all on tape. He was pushed around like a small child for most of last year. He gave up on plays which is on film. He's grasping for air after 3 plays. His combine was less than impressive and very average overall. His workout did even more harm because his bench press is abysmally low. What is so impressive about Smith that makes you think he's going in the 2nd round?

I don't care if Speight's did 50 reps he was quite possibly the worst inside linebacker I've ever seen at LSU. He literally avoided contact so many times. Even when he did fill the right hole he couldn't tackle anyone.

Speights has always looked incredibly athletic to me. However, being an athlete doesn't always translate to being a football player. I always bring up the whiff of a tackle against the A&M TE around the 50 yard line right at the sideline. All he had to do was push the guy out of bounds or even the maligned "shock tackle" would have worked. Instead he tried a nice form tackle wrapping his arms around the player's waist and the TE just shook him off and continued to run 50 yards for a TD...should have been a minimal gain. You have to make that tackle. That is way above a missed tackle. That could have cost LSU the game and it was an easy play...coming in from the side with the player having just caught the ball on the sideline. Have to make that tackle...no excuses.

Right. I was an average football player in HS (three year starter / letter), and I could do 225 ten times as a senior (with bench being my worst lift).

A guy Smith's size should be lifting a lot more.

Smith has the prototypical frame for his position and tested well for his size , not great. His height , arm length, and leanness for a 300 pounder are what scouts love , the same reason he was a 5 star with under whelming high school film . Those traits are what will give him his shot to go in the mid rounds . There aren’t many people born with that frame . He has the elite frame for his position , just not elite production .

measurables are just measurables. They don't mean you are, or could be, a very good football player.

Maason Smith had a lot of time to show what he could do, and didn't show much. Yes, I realize he was injured, but that wasn't the cause of his lack of production.

Maybe House misused him or didn't develop him - I guess we'll find out if Smith makes an NFL roster.

But I'm skeptical of that happening.
