they didn't really change that much from the mid 80s until 1999. The big change happened in 1999 when they went from -5 to -3 and slimmed down the barrel diameter to 2.5 inches. There hadn't been a big change since 1986 when the NCAA imposed a weight limit for bats. Then the obvious next big change was the composite ban following the 2009 season and then the major change of BBCOR in 2011

The 1997 roster was loaded top to bottom. Doug Thompson had 158 SO and Patrick Coogan had 144 which are both higher SO#'s than Lange has had in a season.
