My friend went to Alabama and is always bashing the academic standards of LSU and claims that Bama is in the upper tier of the SEC academically. It seemed like anyone could get into Bama when I was going through the college acceptance process. After doing a google search on the academic standings of the SEC my results were minimal at best. Does anyone know of a credible site that ranks this so I can (hopefully) throw it in his face.

Thanks

I remember that the ACT score needed to get into Bama was lower than LSU's

Well two things:

1.) Rankings suck. Mostly based on research money.

2.) U.S. News is going to have the most "credible" ranking. And Alabama is going to be ranked above LSU in it. LSU is ranked at the bottom of the first tier. Alabama I think it around midway or so.

If I had to guess the order of the ranking would be:

Vandy
UF
UGA
Alabama
Auburn
The Rest

We just made a list recently for high grad. rates (I think 5 SEC schools on this top 15 list). Bama was not one of them.

3 years ago when I was applying to colleges, Bama was easier to get into than LSU. They had lower admission standards. I don't know if that is the case anymore though.

bama is not a better school than LSU academically. They have a lot more money and are playing the system (read my tag line--tourism and new car plants). For instance, they dumped a lot of money into "buying" national merit kids and then also spent a lot of money on nominating kids for the USA Today all academic team. They even spent money paying for professional help to write their nominations. LSU does not have the funds to do this. Texas and A&M did this a while back (the national merit game) and decided it was not worth the money. Other folks have begun to play the game and you will notice that the bama noms have fallen off the USA Today team. Auburn is a good engineering school. I am not sure what bama is known for. LSU is not a great academic power. I am an alum and wish it wasn't so. Having said that, LSU has improved academically and raised their standards. The problem is, they are in a state that values cheap education over quality education. It is all about the Mardi Gras mentality...throw me something mister. Give it to me free (TOPS) or cheap. That is not how Florida or Georgia built their reputations. I would definitely send my kids to LSU over bama, OM, MSU, SC, Tenn. I think the rest are ok and Vandy is head and shoulders above the rest but it is a private school and very expensive.

LSU does have higher admissions standards than Bama. Arkansas's freshman profile is the highest in the SEC West, LSU is no. 2.

Anyone who thinks there is a significant difference between 124 and 79 in the USNR rankings is splitting hairs. Anyone who thinks that a graduate from Alabama has a truly better degree than someone from LSU based on USNR rankings is engaging in fuzzy thinking. The USNR rankings are more about marketing for USNR than they are about serious academic rankings. At the level of any of the SEC West schools, it is far more important to look at how the student performed than which of the those schools he or she went to.

It is probably more important for prospective students to look at individual departments/majors than the overall school ranking by USNR.

I agree, hence my qualifier that I think the rankings and their methodology sucks.

Research money is not part of their ranking methodology, although it likely has an influence on the peer rankings

Doesn't matter which one is better academically. It all depends on the kind of students that schools tend to draw. LSU and Bama can both be the top 2 colleges in the world, but if there students are not willing to put forth the effort to pass and graduate then they will both look like shite. Same goes to any high school. It is only what one can make of it. And for the record: I go to LSU and my opinion is that LSU is as good a school as you can attend. A degree from LSU almost guarantees a job somewhere in Louisiana.

It is. But they must have changed it's worth over the last few years, I think it's only worth 10% of their rankings now. They include other things like endowment funds, faculty salary, etc.

LSU is harder to get into and the incoming students have higher ACTs than Bama.

This website ranks LSU 88th in the world. Not sure how it's based. However, it sounds pretty good to me. Link:

I don't see the University of Alabama in the top 150 FWIW. Not a knock on Bama. I happen to think both universities are good. I think it is ultimately up to the student.

I had a friend who failed out of LSU and got a full ride scholarship to bama... I will never believe that is a better school than LSU

Nah, it's not included at all. Neither is endowment size.

I'm not trying to support Bama, but that ranking you linked isn't attempting to rank academic quality. It's trying to rank the web presence of each university. Look at the name of the website.
