Without bothering to do any research, I would hazard to guess that winning teams tend to run more offensive plays than losing teams. So a positive margin in plays run might be a useful metric for "successful" teams.

I would guess that teams that run no huddle and quick paced offenses run more plays and are not necessarily more successful. More plays could also mean a terrible defense

Football Outsiders has a pretty good formula that tries to take it all into account. They have us ranked 5th in 2013 and 57th this year

You would also have a shorter field with a good defense

LINK

This year, here is the top 10 in plays per game:
1. Baylor
2. Wash St.
3. WVU
4. Colorado
5. Cal
6. E. California
7. Idaho
8. Ark. State
9. Northwestern
10. BYU

19. MSU
20. Tennessee
59. Auburn
71. Ole Miss
72. Alabama
75. Texas A&M
78. UF
82. LSU
107. Georgia

YPP doesn't mean shite if you win the game

Same goes for total offense and passing yardage

so doesn't the number of plays deserve scrutiny when looking at overall effectiveness of an offense?

Only when you base your calculations on this preconceived notion.

Texas A&M is near the top of the country in plays per game. Would you call them a winning team?

75th actually.

LSU was 105th in plays per game last year. We run more plays/game this year.

Losing teams tend to run more plays b/c there would be more passing to catch up and stop the clock

Having a shorter field also results in less plays

Against Auburn, we kept running our fat running backs up the middle for 1 ypc only to have JR have to bail us out on a 3rd and long.

And if you go back and look from 2000 to now, you see similarities in the offenses coached by Jimbo fisher.

You don't seem to have a good grasp of LSU recruiting. ..

I can grasp that apparently, in that time, the BEST QB would could draw here was AJ.

The other QBs we drew were running behind AJ, so what other conclusion should be drawn from that?

Our recruiting since that point has left us with the worst QB in major college football.

Maybe you're not grasping it too well.

I think we mostly played for the 2011 championship because our D was incredible and because of Honey Badger

True

we had 35 total yards passing in the SECCG

And won 42-10. Don't fix what ain't broken.

and 53 in the national championship game (and he basically said JL couldn't handle Bama's pass rush and was too scared to put him in there as a 5th year senior).

Because we were dominated in the trenches. JJ was running for his life all night. He actually went 11/17 but had no time for routes to develop.

At any rate, I can pick two games from any year where we had shitty QB play. JR v. Florida, Mett v. Ole Miss, etc

And I see similarities b/w the offense Jimbo ran at LSU and the offense he runs now...

Who else were we recruiting that ended up elsewhere?

Well, he was 5/13 passing for 30 yards (I gave him 5 too many first time) and he had -5 rushing yards. We didn't fix it and we put up an all-time low in in the BCS championship game. We put up 83 yards passing in our last two games combined at the championship level. We were about to get chased against UGA, but they missed two easy TD passes and Honey Badger took the game over.

This is true. But I don't think you could find two back-to-back passing games that bad on just about any team. We didn't throw for 100 yards the first time we played Bama either.

And those don't come close to his play in the UGA or NC game.

Hell, both those guys threw for 250+ yards in those games.

This year's LSU team.

Just saying, the year as a whole even Lee and Jefferson were serviceable for the majority if the year. There are always games where you can't do what you want and have to find a way to win. We did that against Georgia and did it once against Bama.

But I do think based on the the trends in my initial post, we can expect some huge growth from the offense next year.I believe Jennings and Harris with Cam is world's above Jefferson and Lee without him.

Yeah, we came close at times. I think if they just ran the style they ran against aTm more, they would have a lot more success with what they could do. Of course, aTm has a terrible defense and what we ran against them wouldn't work against everyone just as easy, but I do think that is the style that fits both of our QBs much better. Hopefully...
