The stats take consistency into consideration. Look at auburn and ole miss's drop offs after big years. Considering we never experienced anything like them, statistically yes, we would be in contention for number 2. Woo.

We were also the 6th ranked team if you look at peak S&P+ over that 5 year span.
What does that tell you? As another poster pointed out, we've been consistently average. No excuses for that with the talent we've had and there's certainly no excuse for 5 teams to have better "best seasons" than us in the last 5 years.

So, Auburn gets 19 in 2016 and LSU gets 22 but Auburn goes to the Sugar Bowl, beat LSU head to head and is ranked higher than LSU?

And on a neutral field Lsu would be a several point favorite, and Vegas still has Lsu favored over every team except bama and Ohio state. Lsu played more consistently throughout the year than auburn, they just happened to lose at auburn on a controversial last second play, with miles as coach
