Will be done prior to a women's game in the PMAC next year. Congrats to Big Syl...this is much deserved.

The LSU Hall of Fame Committee has unanimously approved the retirement of the jersey of all-America women's basketball player and three-time Olympic gold medalist Sylvia Fowles.
quote:
The No. 34 worn by Fowles will join the No. 33 worn by Seimone Augustus as retired jerseys in the LSU women's basketball program.
quote:
Fowles, a native of Miami, Fla., will become the 12th LSU athlete or coach to have his/her jersey retired, joining Augustus; men's basketball players Bob Pettit, Pete Maravich, Rudy Macklin and Shaquille O'Neal; football players Billy Cannon and Tommy Casanova; baseball coach Skip Bertman and baseball players Ben McDonald, Eddy Furniss and Todd Walker.
quote:
Fowles, who was inducted into the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015, was a two-time All-America center at LSU, and she led the Lady Tigers to four consecutive Final Four appearances from 2005 through 2008. She was the 2008 National Defensive Player of the Year and the SEC Player of the Year, and she earned All-SEC honors in each of her final three seasons.
quote:
Fowles is a three-time Olympic gold medalist, helping lead Team USA to titles in 2008 at Beijing, in 2012 at London and in 2016 at Rio.
quote:
She is the founder of the Sylvia Fowles Family Fund, which supports her extensive work for youth and families both in Baton Rouge and in Miami. She also serves as a spokesperson for CURE: Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy.
quote:
Fowles, a 2009 LSU graduate, established school career records for rebounds (1,570), blocked shots (321), free throws made (494) and free throws attempted.

Her and Augustus made me interested in WBB. I like this.

I am glad they are finally including Fowles. Augustus getting her # retired first made sense because she was 2 years ahead of Fowles...but including Fowles with Seimone is a no-brainer. She was a unique talent.

Well, Sylvia and Javi are both from Miami.......hmmmmmmmm
The year Baylor beat them in Indianapolis was the one that hurt the most. LSU was clearly the best team that year, but one bad half vs. Baylor in the semis cost them. LSU would have crushed Michigan State in the title game.

I agree. I've said for years that Kim Mulkey coached circles around Pokey in that game. With that being said, Sylvia is much deserving of this honor. Kudos to her and the committee for bestowing this on one of the most decorated LSU athletes of all time.

That game still irks me to think about. From the beginning of a potential dynasty to becoming the Buffalo Bills of women's basketball.
Happy for Big Syl. Well deserved.

Everytime someone gets their jersey retired, i think when are they going to retire Kevin Faulks jersey and what they hell are they waiting for.
Congrats to Fowles.

The next time we sign an all-everything recruit we should give her #35

I'm all for Fowles getting her number retired, but how is that we have no more football players' numbers retired then we do women's basketball players? Tittle, Taylor, James, Dorsey, Faulk?

I miss the Pokey era. LSU WBB would be a major sport for us today if she was still here. The special talents she brought in was incredible.
Seimone
Look how loud and packed the PMAC was
Yes it was WBB but her teams were fun to watch. The loss of Pokey and Summitt from college WBB completely altered the landscape of WBB today.

when the generation that was growing up when Faulk was playing takes over running TAF in years to come....his number will be retired.
He's obviously loved by all LSU fans but for whatever reason he's revered by the youngerish fans who were in college or below in a way that he just isn't among the older fans.

In football it's hard to retire just one number because there were so many greats. I feel like there are probably close to 10 who could be considered. Hard to draw the line.

she was unstoppable back then. Damn they should have won at least 2 NCs

excellent to hear this...I used to really like to watch big syl play.
there used to be a picture of her with her hair in pony tails sticking out to the sides...she looked intimidating as hell at 6'6" with hair sticking up.
