The national media tends to favor teams who play a tough OOC regardless of how stupid you might think it would be.

If we had skipped the VT game and simply beaten Arkansas or Kentucky we'd have been in easily.

If we would have beaten Florida, Bama, Ole Miss, Arkansas and Georgia this year we easily would have been in the MNCG too. What's your point?

The VT game pushed us over the top and complented our SEC championship despite 2 loses.

But the other 9 times out of 10 it would work the other way around.

Assuming we lose 9 of 10 which is very unlikely.

When was the last time a big OoC was the major factor in keeping a team for the BCSCG?

But buried in your little "victory" there is the inherent trickiness of the SEC - we beat Florida and Alabama yet lost to Kentucky and Arkansas?

Which is exactly why you want a good OoC game. Its virtually impossible to win week in week with the depth in the SEC, so when you do slip up a good OoC game offsets that.

What did we gain from the relationship with VT except A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP?

Nevermind the hype, tv coverage, and a possibility of building relationships with possible recruits.

Again, if we had a playoff system I'd be all for this. But not under the current setup.

Which was the last team that kept itself from playing in the BCSCG by playing a tough OoC game.

OU played a couple of big OoC games this year. They got there anyway. LSU in 07. OSU played UT in 06 and got there.

The SEC is a minefield - especially considering that last gauntlet in Atlanta that you need to get through.

The degree of difficulty is already astronomical given the slim margin of error (1 loss if you're lucky, 2 will never happen again), so adding a quality OOC opponent is ridiculously irresponsible and stupid.

hmmm

2003 National Champs - SEC Team that scheduled Arizona out of conference

2006 National Champs - SEC Team that scheduled Florida State out of conference

2007 National Champs - SEC team that scheduled Virgina Tech out of conference

2008 National Champs - SEC Team that scheduled Florida State & Miami out of conference

My point is that yes, that ONE TIME the tough OOC helped put us over the top
2004: SC played v-tech(acc champ)
2005: UT played @ tOSU
2006: UF played florida state
2007: LSU played v-tech
2008: UF played miami and florida state

a big OOC gives you a national audience to prove whether you are BCS material. what are you worried about anyways? we are not south florida needing to squeak into the big game. we win the big ones more than we lose.

Anyone that thinks this is a dumb move

it's not like we just scheduled Colts. We will get tons of cred for beating an OOC BCS team. We are LSU and you're a punk if you're afraid of playing WV

but teams that schedule BCS quality OOC opponents NEVER make the title game.

I thought you were going to to the fact that the past 2 years the BCSCG runner ups have played Washington...

I agree, but not for exactly the same reasons.

LSU will probably be a top 5 team at least, while WVU will likley be hovering around the top 25 at best, as opposed to two legit national title contenders like with VT.

However, WVU loves them some football and their fans are "passionate" to say the least.

Yeah, I'm less stoked about this than I would be had Rodriguez stayed. I'm not sure how good they will be then and it may not be a game that gives our strength of schedule much of a boost.

On paper maybe not, but voters slobber all of the knob of any OoC victory over a BCS conference team.

It's a good move, even if WVU will be down in the next few years. Much more attractive than North Texas, for instance.

West "Bye God" Virgina! That is a road trip I won't miss out on. I think this is a HUGE lift for our team. This is for sure a nationally televised game.

Cincinnatti and TCU, and I would say that helped propel them over UT, whose schedule included Rice and UTEP.
