Mainieri would have thrown Broussard Sunday if the game was closer. He said as much Saturday after the win against Arky.

It doesnt get much closer than 0-0. Im not sure what you are getting at.

Pull a name out of a hat to start sundays and use everyone available.
That's likely whats going to happen. Hopefully Poche can give Manieri 7 solid innings. Give the sunday starter until 3 then situational pitching from then on.

My point is that Mainieri isn't scared to throw Broussard 3 days in a row. So what's to stop him from starting him on game 3 of a series after closing a game 1?

Nothing. It's what he did with Bradford and Coleman, and it's a role that Broussard would be able to handle.

If he can handle pitching 20 pitches in three straight days, it is plausible Mainieri will throw him out there to start Sundays if he only closes on Friday nights.

I dont think thats very plausible at all unless you plan on starting him but only throwing him max 3 innings.

What if they need him to close out game 3

He would have never started Joe after pitching back to back nights Friday and Saturday. That's a completely different scenario than closing Friday, resting Saturday, then starting Sunday.

The latter scenario is the hybrid Coleman role that myself and others have wished for Joe.

Mainieri said he would throw him in this scenario in the 10th Inning Show Saturday afternoon.

right im saying closing Friday and starting Sunday sounds like an awful plan for Broussard.

Again you bring up Coleman, before Bradford. Neither kid was hurt the year before they did the friday/sunday role.

Yeah because Ryan Verdugo, Jared Bradford and Louis Coleman's careers are also over...

Completely different types of pitchers. Joe is a fastball/curveball guy. All 3 of those had 3 or 4 pitches with a legit out pitch. Joe is only good for an inning or two right now. Maybe that's something you look at next year when his arm is stronger.

His arm has never been stronger than it is right now. He's throwing 96 MPH. He never threw that hard prior to his TJ surgery.

thats a product of throwing 1 inning instead of starting.

I'm not saying he definitely can sustain that kind of velocity after a long start, but his arm seems very strong to me.

Jesus. Throwing 96 one or two pitches in 1 inning is a lot different than having the arm strength and stamina to go 5-7 innings and running up 70-90 pitches. There's others to try first before you take away your best closer who is coming off of tommy john surgery.

eta: Of course if he does this and it works I'll just chalk it up to the baseball Gods being on our side.

My point is that Mainieri will not shy away from pushing some of his pitchers if they say they are good to go. He appears to have a lot of confidence in Joe. If we continue seeing game 3 starters struggling, I think we will potentially see Joe start on Sunday when not used on a Saturday.

A third starter isn't as important as a stud closer, IMO. But when Mainieri can supplement one for both, he will try it.

I'm not even close to insinuating he throw that much. "Jesus."

You can mark me down as being a proponent of Parker Bugg step into the Sunday role before Broussard. I'm just merely stating that this scenario is one I bet Mainieri has thought about and will continue if these Sunday struggles continue.

I think it will all depend on how we do in the first 2 games this week. If we're up 2-0 on Ole Miss then he'd be crazy not to start Bugg. If we're 1-2 or 0-2 I could definitely see Mainieri panicking and throwing Joe Saturday and I would really hate to see that.
