The University is committed to finding the seventh Mike the Tiger, and the search is underway. During this time, the School of Veterinary Medicine staff is working to ensure that when a new tiger is found, his home is more grand than any other tiger’s in the world.

Built in 2005, the current habitat cost $3 million to construct, and gave Mike V more room to live. The old habitat was only 2,000 square feet, but the current one is over 15,000 square feet. The update also achieved the goal of giving future Mike more space for recreational activities such as swimming and playing with their ball.

...

“Becoming an accredited sanctuary means that LSU has met high standards of excellence in animal care and is operating ethically and responsibly,” the release states. “LSU believes that these changes are in the best interest of the longevity and ethical management of the LSU tiger mascot program.”

I love my state, but that's the Louisiana way.

The tiger cage is nicer than most houses .

Is the state paying for this, or is the money spent on this being donated for this very specific purpose?

This.

You can always tell the ignorant person in the room "why are they using tax payer money..."

And general "well why don't they use that money for this instead"

Money that is assigned by an outside party cannot be reassigned by the recipient. Additionally, what LSU is doing by trying to be certified as a sanctuary or even "gold" cert sustainable campus, is that additional grants and fellowships will be open to the uni as a whole and individual programs

Alleva will probably bring in the cougar they have pics of in Morehouse Parish because he's one of us and wanted to be here.

It is not taxpayer money. Also, never underestimate the value of tradition.

Like the tradition of actually bringing his arse into the stadium. I wish my university was ran by a bunch of pussys that give into any pressure from the liberal media.

Which means that if anyone wants to complain about classrooms falling apart, write a check to fix that specifically.

Would this help the vet school specifically or could it have more broad positive impact? Either way, this looks more like an investment rather than a vanity project and should be applauded as such.

Especially if it is the Athletic Booster Club funding an investment in the academic side.

I'd imagine the vet school specifically for the tiger sanctuary. The other example, which was in the papers a few days ago (LSU is silver certified I believe, looking for gold) would be overall, but (and I don't know for fact) it may help specific programs be eligible for more grants

And I agree, as the school continues to invest in things like this, puts in time and effort, the less they'd have to rely on the state gov for funding, which has proven time and time again to not give a shite about education other than as a talking point

I think we should go back to the old prison cell style cage. Then he'd be happy to get out and take a ride in the trailer once in a while.

Know how I know you haven't been on campus in years?

In addition to the brand new business college, LSU is almost done with a massive renovation of Patrick Taylor, one of the biggest classroom buildings on campus, complete with modern labs for several of the engineering departments.

Yeah, LSU sure is cutting corners for the sake of a tiger.

The university itself did not spend a dime on the Mike's new habitat. It was all paid for by donations. All those bricks with names on them in front of Mike's cage were sold with all proceeds going to build the new habitat. I know because I donated and purchased a few of the bricks scattered throughout the area.

You have absolutely no clue what you're talking about here. It is better to keep you mouth shut and let people think you're an idiot rather than opening your mouth and proving you're an idiot.

So when someone writes a check and says, "I would like this to go toward the Tiger cage." LSU is supposed to repair the classroom floors?

Write a check to your church for missions, and I promise you will be pissed if it goes towards the sprinkler system.

Sorry maybe I'm just slow, but are they like starting from scratch with the habitat they have now?
