Thurman "Crowe" Peele succumbed to a lengthy illness last night at the age of 88.
Peele was the 1955 NCAA Heavyweight Boxing Champion for LSU.
Crowe went on to fight professionally after that year, as LSU dropped the sport in 1956. His professional record was 16-5.
Those of us old enough to remember Highland Road before Smoothie King might remember Crowe Peele Texaco. Mr. Crowe loved LSU Students and accepted checks from many of them running short on Cash before debit cards became a thing.
Crowe was one of the nicest and kindest gentlemen I have ever known.
RIP Crowe Peele - 7/10/1934 to 11/29/2022.

Thank you for keeping his memory alive, I had no idea who he was. I believe it’s important to remember and acknowledge previous generations. RIP

He had his station at the corner of Highland and State Street and then he moved out on Jefferson Highway just past the new Bluebonnet.

The guy ran a real service station. RIP

went there all the time, he talked, or sort of mumbled, like an old cartoon dog character, Muttley? RIP to an LSU treasure from the past, he was really hurt that he was kept of of the LSU sports HoF because he didn't finish his degree

Mr. Crowe was a nice man. He went to our church when I was a kid and would give us a boxers stance or grab us by the ankles and turn us upside down when we saw him. My Dad brought his cars to his place when he needed repairs. Good memories! RIP Mr. Crowe

I tanked up at his station several times in the mid 80s. I think I also remember getting a brake tag or two there.

I remember seeing Jose Vargas there one day.

Nice dude. Rest in peace.
