The joke is that they keep saying they're in Maine but everything about them says they're in Louisiana. The bit doesn't work if you don't really play up the stereotypes. It's funny.

Maine and Louisiana have very similar native peoples. French Canadian in origin, live off the land, family before anything else. Replace swamp boats with snowmobiles, crawfish with lobster. Very similar.
