LSU Football's Achilles Heel

Over the last decade obviously Quarter Back and depth at middle linebacker have been our Achilles Heel. We have had a ton of talent all over the board with the exception of those positions. It was so obvious how much better we became when Kendall Beckwith replaced you know who in the line up and it cost us the Florida game when he went out. Kevin Minter also was great at Line Backer but when he got hurt at Florida it cost us the game.
I am very hopeful that coach "O" is changing this with Miles Brennan at QB and the recruitment of great talent at linebacker. The future is bright at LSU.

Sure... Offensive line will be the issue this year though

The talent has been there. We just haven't developed that talent into anything useful.

This is not the year to have a worse OL if last year's got abused by Bama at home

How much will having an offense that is unpredictable help the OL? Also, teams will not be able to put 8-9 men in the box.
There were definitely growing pains in the spring for the OL, but they will have 5 games before they line up against a really solid DL (FL).
Lastly, Grimes will have the freedom to put his OL in the positions he wants instead of guards at OT and OT at center.
This season will be a referendum on Grimes and if he was truly a great hire that was held back or a mistake.

Grimes has done a average at best job recruiting olinemen. Look at this years class. It is lacking as well.

Last year we had the overall #1 ranked Oline in college football, but can be beaten by an equally talented dline with poor receiver and QB play.

To be fair, bama abused everyone's OL last year. To me, the key is developing solid depth behind the starters for the future, particularly at tackle. The qb position should be much better because of the type of offense we are now running.

I think for this new style offense we will need a lighter, more mobile and agile o-line who is also smarter.

Last season LSU was ranked the #1 OL by PFF. It does seem strange since they were definitely questionable in pass protection, but according to their metrics we had a great line.
2017's class has Deculcus at OT whom is regarded as a guy who can potentially play right away. Ingram and Charles are both 4star guards who could grow into starters.
2018 includes Chasen Hines who is a very good 4star guard, Cameron Wire is an extremely athletic OT and Cole Smith is the #6 ranked center.
2019 we have the #1 OG committed and #2 OT in the nation committed.
I'd say the future looks bright.

If, BIG if all of those guys actually sign with LSU. Who the hell knows these days which is why I don't pay much attention to recruiting until closer to signing day. There's way too much that changes every year. I realize it's not just LSU.

I agree. That's the same reason folks need to calm down about the 2018 class because what we see now will be very different by signing day. 2019, who knows if these guys stick, but the fact that they like enough of what they see at the program to commit early is a good sign. Grimes, Canada and O must be doing something right.

I am not talking about the next year or the year after. I am talking about the his recruiting so far since he has been here. LSU has OGs playing tackle and seems to be thin there as well. Is that on Miles?

It's discussed in this article and it was commonly known that was what Miles wanted. His interest was getting road graders for a power run game which left minimally agile players on the edges that had limited pass protection technique or ability.

This worries me. I actually think Malone and Toby with their experience will be good but if one of them gets hurt who steps in?

It probably will be and eventually people will get sick of seeing it, but it atleast provides benefits that the toss dive didn't. The toss dive added nothing outside the opportunity for positive yardage that is attendant with literally every other type of play. The jet sweep keeps the defense honest and freezes defenders because they have to respect the speed, and you can do 10-fold the amounts of things you could do off of the toss-dive. There will no doubt be frustration when it seems like we're getting 0 and negative yardage too much, but it provides infinitely more advantages than the toss-dive.

I suspect it will offer more opportunity to exploit defensive weaknesses, but when we go up against teams that can match up one on one it will just look like another gimmick offense. My hope is that Canada will be more creative than past OCs and be able to come up with multiple schemes and not get stuck on one a la SS option/toss dive.
