According to this article, LSU only has an endowment of $625 million while other schools such as Texas and Texas A&M have billions which we obviously know comes from oil money. Supposedly the athletic department runs a deficit every year. Can't say that's not concerning. I know TAF does a lot to prop up the athletics department.

Does it? My understanding has always been that LSU was one of the few departments that constantly earns a profit (2020 not withstanding)

Texas and TAMU literally have twice the number of alumni as does LSU. That makes a huge difference.

Endowments don't really affect athletics that much. Also like the guys said Texas schools have way more alums. LSU would need to really expand their online program to even start to scratch the surface.

They just completed a big fundraising effort, Fierce for the Future, that roughly doubled the academic endowment.

LSU is an institution of higher learning. That's what endowements were created to enhance - not athletic programs. If endowements were intended to "prop up" athletic departments, Stanford and Ivy League schools would win every national championship in every sport, every year.

It's Tiger Rag, the university endowment is totally separate from TAF, the fundraising arm of athletics
Endowments are to support academic endeavours and unfortunately most supporters of LSU only want to support athletics
In the same article he thinks Dale Brown deserves a statue
All his paper has done is discredit LSU at every turn because he thinks his buddy Dale was mistreated
Get over it and he doesn't deserve a statue

That's not true. They actually have a surplus every year and give $ to the school.

Well that’s not accurate.

Regardless….University endowment is on the academic University side, not the athletic side. I wish we had a higher University endowment, but nonetheless that has nothing to do with athletics anyway.

True. And the difference is not because Texas and A & M have "twice as many alumni". Otherwise, we would have half the endowment of those schools. If we did, or even close, this conversation would not be happening.
LSU is obscenely underfunded and under-endowed. But that's education, not athletics, so most in the state do not care.

So they aren't including TAF donations in this calculation. That's pretty dumb. Do they think people will give donations and expect them not to be used? or expect them to only go towards academic purposes?

If you don't count TAF donations (and whatever fundraising entity every other school has), then very few schools make any money, and I bet its actually zero.

2022 ohio state had the highest revenue, and net income of $26MM, but $63MM of that was contributions.

Texas had net income of $9.1MM but $75MM of that was in restricted gifts, and endowmets.

My issue with this as a donor at any other program would really be based on looking at how the podunk school in Louisiana can win three national championships in 20 years with so "little" money, while the big, bad Texas schools can't maintain themselves propped up with these billions. I don't believe for a second that these financial issues are real when it comes to Athletics.

TAM makes more than $650 million per year off it's endowment and a billion more from the PUF.
