Yep. Is Coach still trying to turn Sciv into a 1B?

Doubt it but on days when he's not catching that's pretty much the only place for him to play.

If he is not a C, he should not play in the field IMO. He is not physically suited for the 1B position.

If his play this spring is anything like his play this fall, it's a moot point anyway.

I wish you could have been out there to see a few of the freshman stud pitchers. Everyone we saw today was under 90.

Me too. Today was the first time I was able to break away from work and make it out there.

I honestly don't think Scivicque has a role on this team. He CAN'T play first base. He is not a good catcher. He isn't going to DH against LHPs over Chinea. He probably won't DH against RHPs over Deichmann. About his only role is just for a power bat as a pinch hitter. His defense and running are both just too big of liabilities, and even his hitting is too streaky.

Bryce hit a HR today and Sciv is only popping out. (He's even doing this in BP). My point is that I'm not even sure he's a pinch hitter for this team.

But let us not get ahead of ourselves. It has only been two weeks of fall. We see issues that may not be around come the spring and see strengths that could disappear with one injury or mental collapse.

I agree but they don't use a DH in the scrimmage so if he's not catching he's got to be somewhere.

They did for Bain a few times which they've stopped doing recently. I like not having the DH. More ABs for everyone.

I gave a hit for Byrd's first at bat even though he was thrown out trying to stretch it to a 2b.

Had a blast being there today. My first practice attended. It's such a great set up.

Thought Byrd was safe at second, but he didn't maintain contact with the base as he slide into it.

I am not just basing my opinion on 2 weeks. Scivicque should have never played first base last year. He is terrible there. I liked him at catcher last year because I thought he was better than Chinea but with Papierski here now, he is no longer even the best option there. I would normally say he would be a good option at DH but you have to find a place for Chinea aginst LHPs and Deichmann (and maybe Byrd too) will be in against RHPs which will limit the number of openings in the lineup.

Scivicque is so slow that I almost hate for him to even get on base. He just clogs up the bases. He is one guy that I actually want to just swing for the fences because a home run is about the only thing he contributes positively.

I agree with you about the Jordans. I really like them. I think we have a very good core of underclassmen offensively with Fraley, Zardon, Robertson, Deichmann, Papierski, Byrd, and those two.

Except for the DH.

I just don't get why Coach had Sciv at 1B if he was not seriously considering playing him there. We've all seen what Sciv can and can't do at 1B. Why not play a contender for the 1B position?

Because Scivicque IS a contender at first base at least for now. He might not be come next February but he's in the mix for first base for this fall practice.

Or there's just nowhere else to put him during a scrimmage. Since PM wants to see Hale at other positions and Chinea and Pap need time behind the plate. I really think Bryce has a better chance of being over there than him. He flashed the leather yesterday and his at bats have been impressive. That's where he's most ready for the college game.

Or......it's because Mainieri has said Scivicque IS in the mix to being a contender at first base when he's not catching.

You posted that already. Instead of me reposting I'll just refer you to my previous post.

It's not like PM would say there's nowhere for Sciv to play. Technically, he's still in the running for catcher, too. And more so. First base is a terrible option for him and there are too many players who are better defensively ahead of him.

Question out of curiosity. What ever happened to Sewald? Attrition? Couldn't cut it in the classroom? Kid seemed to take somewhat of a leadership role on the team with the post game speeches and whatnot, and next thing you know he's gone. Odd.
