That guy ended up winning the Groza award for best kicker in the country in 05. Still have no idea how he missed 3 XPs

First of all, thanks to you guys for allowing me to post here... I have always enjoyed Tigerdroppings! Now, what is the story behind LSU rarely ever wearing their purple jerseys? As on outsider, I think the purple jerseys are sharp...Always wondered and since you guys are wearing them Saturday, I thought it would be a good time to ask. See ya'll in November.. -Hoyt

The oldtimers would and will consider it blasphemy, but I have always preferred the Purple Jerseys myself. When I was younger (Born in '79) all of my remembrances of LSU Football were of my Dad adjusting the TV to pick up grainy, bad V-Hold images from the pay-per-view Tigervision Channel since we couldn't afford to pay for the games. Whenever we could get a halfway decent picture you could see those sharp purple jerseys.

Again this is just me talking, but I'd love it if we went back to purple jerseys at home...or at least mixed it up a bit. I'd love to have the first Non-Con and the first SEC home games see us in Purple and then whites the rest of the time.

The NCAA has no good purpose to it.

quote:they are cursed.......this belief has remained a mystery, because it's only associated with LSU football, and not the other LSU athletic units. The Tigers made it to the Final Four men's basketball in 1986 wearing nothing but purples in the tournament, and LSU baseball won a championship in 1997 wearing purple shirts exclusively in Omaha. Why the football team has this dread of them just doesn't make sense.

When Vanderbilt did not give permission for the white jerseys LSU came out in gold jerseys to the delight of the home crowd!

I have never researched it, but I know that I always dread seeing them in purple. I thought it was just me that felt that way. And I just don't like the look.

If they have to wear the purple jerseys, then I would love to see black pants with a gold stripe down the side. Just to see what it would look like. I saw a post somewhere that had the all black unis. It looked bad arse. Since SC is wearing all white, it would be awesome to see our tigers in combat all black unis. Where's the originality?
This, but with gold numbers. The purple numbers on black don't work:

As you know, dark jerseys are worn for home games however in the 80's or 90's, not sure when LSU decided they liked their white jerseys better. LSU request to wear white jerseys for home games if the other team allows it.

WTF?

LSU was wearing white jerseys at home from at least the 1950s. In 1983, the NCAA mandated that visiting teams had to wear white and home teams had to wear jerseys "of a contrasting color". This rule stayed in effect through 1994. Throughout this period, LSU always wore purple jerseys at home games.

When LSU hired Gerry DiNardo in 1995, he personally appeared before the NCAA rules committee to request a change in the rule to allow LSU to wear white jerseys at home. He even brought white LSU jerseys for all the committee members. After giving them the shirts he said something to the effect that "My family is from Brooklyn, and where we come from, if you accept the bribe..." They all laughed and they agreed to change the rule. Beginning in 1995, the home team could wear white if the visiting team agreed to allow it.

In 1996, Vanderbilt, pissed because we hired DiNardo away from them, refused to agree to let us wear white, so DiNardo broke out the gold jerseys for the first time (we would later wear gold in two other games, the 1997 Independence Bowl and the 1998 game at Florida). Sometime afterward, the SEC made a rule that, for conference games, required the visiting team to allow the home team to wear white if it requested permission to do so.

no that was never the case. All you have to do is google famous college football players in the 70's, 80's and 90's to see that you are misremembering.

The requirement for NCAA football uniform jerseys, per rules 1-4-4, 1-4-5, & 1-4-8, is that home teams wear dark jerseys and road teams wear white. The default color for LSU home jerseys is purple, this can be modified only if the athletic department gets express written permission from the visiting team to permit the white home jerseys, prior to the start of the season.

The purple jerseys remind me of losing to everybody back in the '80s and early '90s and beating cupcakes by 3 touchdowns since 2000.

George Allen, when he was coach of the Los Angeles Rams, said the team wore white at home so the home fans could appreciate the visiting teams' colorful uniforms.

That's one benefit of LSU wearing white at home.

At least the Purple jerseys are somewhat acceptable now. They were almost completely abandoned there for a few years because of the association with the Archer and Hallman years. Hence the appearance of the Gold jerseys twice under DiNardo.

I was at LSU when DiNardo showed up (which people weren't really happy with, at first). However, he was smart. He made a big and very public effort to get the white jerseys back for home games, and that won him a lot of support before he ever coached a game. He also did a good job with his Bring Back the Magic tour. I remember he even came to a pre-season band rehearsal and gave us a rah-rah speech about how important we were to the program. He did a solid PR job, and the white jerseys were a BIG part of that.

I remember that Saban actually faced some resistance from fans when he first started using Purple again at home against non-con opponents. Remember the speech about appealing to 17-18 year old recruits? Now, they are at least accepted as not being "cursed" by most of the fan base. But the White jerseys will always be associated with all of our championship seasons.
