That's partly true. I personally hate it though, when visiting teams sometime come into Tiger Stadium wearing plug ugly alternate uniforms. Examples: Miss. State in 2010, South Carolina in 2012, A&M 2013, and Kentucky last year.

I remember liking the purple jerseys as a kid but now all they do is remind me of shitty cupcake blowouts. I hope they mix it up tomorrow with the white pants and white helmets.

Everyone is wrong here (except the part about Dietzel's role). The TRUE story of LSU's white jerseys dates to 1957. LSU sucked that year, but a highly-ranked Georgia Tech visited LSU. Tech was famous for wearing white at home (still is). Dietzel decided to motivate the team by wearing white at home to somehow steal Tech's white jersey magic and win in an upset. LSU did upset Tech and kept on wearing white for good luck. LSU won the national title the next year, and the rest is history.

They were almost completely abandoned there for a few years because of the association with the Archer and Hallman years. Hence the appearance of the Gold jerseys twice under DiNardo.

As far back as the McClendon era the purple jerseys were generally thought to be bad luck, apparently because, at least as people perceived, the team tended to lose on the rare occasions that they were worn. As a result of the Deitzel and McClendon eras, white jerseys with the purple and gold shoulder stripes became the preferred and defining symbol of LSU.

That negative association with purple largely disappeared after the NCAA changed the rule, but the white jerseys even then were the jerseys associated with LSU. DiNardo's campaign to bring them back for home games was brilliant and cemented for ever the white jersey as the brand of LSU football. The white jersey, the 5 yard field markings and the traditional style goal posts are all pRt of the LSU mystique.

LSU mystique

Most of South Carolina's traditions originated under Dietzel. They no longer run onto the field through the goal posts or wear white jerseys at home, but they do still play about a third of their games at night.

Thanks for the added history behind the origin of the white home jersey.

Thanks for the added history. I didn't know the superstitions about the Purple jerseys went that far back.
