So are we taking 3 or 4 OL this class?

No. 12 is a good place to be preseason. Me likey.

quote:

On the Tigers, ESPN said “Ed Orgeron has told everyone to geaux away this preseason, perhaps to give a new offense as much of a surprise element as possible. “No SEC program has more top-end talent to compete with Alabama, but the Tigers' offense can't simply be Derrius Guice carrying the ball. Matt Canada has reshaped offenses at several programs, and if he can give LSU a schematic edge it lacked, look out in the Bayou.”

While we're on the subject, I hope hurricane season stays as quiet as it has been thus far.

Would love to see the gumps get knocked off week 1. They'd only fall to 2 though.

Tigers top 4 by week 7, #1 on 11/5.

If past history is any indicator, then it's not a "good place". Generally when LSU has started the season ranked outside the top 10, they finished the season ranked outside the top 10. LSU hasn't "come from the back of the pack" to be a championship contender since 2010. With last year being the big exception, generally when LSU finished in the top 10, they started the year in the top 10 (2005, 2006, 2007, 2011).

HOWEVER, this season marks the biggest change in LSU football since 2005. Frankly, I don't see how anyone can realistically predict what LSU will do this season. There are just too many unknowns.

Looking at the poll, once you get past #3 there are questions about everyone. USC and PSU finished hot, but they were ugly early. Do they pick up where they left off in 2017. Or do they regress to the mean a little bit? How good is Clemson without Watson? Hell, you could legitimately argue for LSU being ranked anywhere from 4th to 15th

If this coaching model is going to work, I think this may be our best chance to make a serious run.

It has an 07 feel imo. We lost a ton of talent at the top of the draft, but bring back a great DC that should put together a defense that should have us in every game.

But more than anything, we have a new, creative OC that teams are not going to know what to expect, similar to the way Crowton came in and made that 07 offense so difficult to stop. He has a veteran QB and OL to work with and a true workhorse at RB with lots of young and potentially explosive playmakers at WR.

With only facing three ranked teams and Bama losing so much on D I honestly don't see how things will get any easier after this year, especially if Aranda moves on and maybe even Canada too.

2017 very well might be our best shot to win the SEC for quite some time.

Everyone other than those in Tuscaloosa and Paul Finebum are tired of this.

Hopefully this is the year that somebody else dethrones bama, and resets the balance of CFB. It has to happen fairly consistently because obviously they can lose the NCG and still start number 1 next season. Time to step up and restore order, LSU. Not just for us, or the SEC, but for the world.

About right.

We could go either way. Please let the OL stay healthy.

Yes, even losing Maea we still bring back 3 starters and replace him with an upperclassman that honestly should be ready to start at this point anyway.

Depth is non-existent, but if we can avoid losing anyone else I still think this OL should be the kind of unit that can win the SEC, especially since Bama's front 7 is as young and inexperienced as it has been in close to a decade or will be for another several years.

I don't know. That 2007 didn't sneak up on anyone. LSU was ranked #2 to start the season. Other than at safety, LSU returned most of their front 7 in 2007. This year the defense is going to have to replace some big time players at all three levels.

I agree with you about the offense though.

I tend to agree. The schedule absolutely won't be easy, but at least at the outset it appears you're getting some favorable matchups except for 2 games (Florida and Bama).

Auburn is here (LSU rarely leaves JHS with a win)
The Bama hangover game vs. Ark is here.
There's no short week vs. A&M.

Plus, while you get Tenn. on the road, it seems like last year was supposed to be their year. Now they have a HC very much on the hotseat going into a season with a new QB, new RBs, and having to replace some key guys on defense. Ole Miss seems like a mess and I'm not sold on Miss. St. being a really good team

Yeah the 07 feel is mainly about the O, but with Aranda I just can't be too worried about the D. Especially since we aren't facing any real powerhouse offenses, Bama included.

Losing Jamal is huge, but not any bigger than losing a 4 year starter in Laron. We are DBU, so we should have plenty for a coach like Aranda to make work. Maybe Paris is a veteran ready to lead like Steltz was, or maybe the hype with Harris or Delpit is real and they are the next true freshmen to step in and start Day 1 a la Laron and Jamal.

far too many unknowns for EVERY team. That's why pre-season polls are absurd.

I hate all polls, but if you're going to do it, at least wait until 3/4 of the season is done so we have more data points. Even then, it's too early, because many teams (us included) have tough conference games and rivalry games in November.

I realize people love to argue about polls, but it always made me wonder why people put any stock at all in voters who simply guess which team is better, when the voters (media, "coaches") don't pay attention to all 130 teams. In fact, they probably fill out their ballots in a few minutes and just do it based on final scores, without looking at the games in any detail.
