McClendon noose-dived after that, though. Miles appears to be improving. His recruiting certainly is.

Ok now remind us what happened in the 80-90s to LSU football after McClendon was canned.

Crazy how close it is.

# of games does need to be taken into account, though. Miles' teams play 1-2 more games per year, so I'll bet his % of losses is a bit lower than Mac's.

How many extra games has Les played? My guess is at least 11...

At least 11, more like 13. Mac never had a season >12 games, Les never <13. And he's had 2 seasons of 14 games. I think.

They didn't play as many games against the Mcneese's and UAB's of the world. Look at schedules from the 60's and compare to today.

In the 80s we had two SEC championships. Same as in Miles decade here.

It's so useless to compare LSU to the 80s and 90s, no matter the angle, good or bad, you're trying to pursue. It's just a categorically different program now with the infrastructure in place to maximize the natural resources. College football is drastically different as well.

This is a great post.

Show the record v. Saban of any active coach in America who has faced him 11 times.

He's demolishing all of them.

Alabama is the equivalent of Duke, Kentucky or Kansas in hoops - an established blue blood that simply has a dominant program.

Ole Miss as "Bama Killer" is a myth. Sure 2 in a row, but one included 5 TO's and a TD off a dude's helmet and they still lost by 6. Freeze will not beat Saban again as long as they're in their current jobs.

Losing to Bama absolutely fricking blows, but to think that a different coach or OC or scheme will guarantee us sustained success v. Bama is ignoring decades of history.

Bama, like Duke and Kentucky in hoops, is better at adapting to the times to dominate long term than everyone else.

National Championships Teams in the 1980s

1980 - Georgia
1981 - Clemson
1982 - Penn State
1983 - Miami
1984 - BYU
1985 - Oklahoma
1986 - Penn State
1987 - Miami
1988 - Notre Dame
1989 - Georgia Tech/Colorado

National Championship Teams Since Miles' Tenure

2005 - Texas
2006 - Florida (permanent cross division rival)
2007 - LSU
2008 - Florida (permanent cross division rival)
2009 - Alabama (division rival)
2010 - Auburn (division rival)
2011 - Alabama (division rival) vs LSU
2012 - Alabama (division rival)
2013 - Florida State vs Auburn (division rival) Florida State won
2014 - Ohio State (Alabama made 4 team playoff)

If you can't understand that the SEC today is more competitive that it has ever been you are either too dense or insanely bias.

In that time Mile's has 2 SEC Championships and 1 National Title with another appearance.

A few really good teams (two or three were better than anything Mac had fielded in his last 10 or so years), a couple of really bad breaks, and two disastrous hires (one is almost forgivable, one is not).

What's the point? Mac was at the end of his road. Are you suggesting they should have just held onto him as coach indefinitely.

McClendon was 5-3 at game 8 in his last season.

Miles is 7-1 with a loss to arguably the best team in the nation with the #1 recruiting class incoming.
