i think one of coach miles weaknesses is media communications (which is the way we fans get our team news). doubt anyone would argue that point. but what this does is create animosity and mistrust between the program (specifically Miles) and many of the fans. he uses such, let's just say, strange analogies and metaphors that it is damn difficult to understand what the hell he is trying to communicate to us. if he were a stand up comedian that specialized in twisting the english language and using malapropisms and spoonerisms, etc. he would be a huge hit. but we, the fans, are damn serious about our team and we want for him to talk some "turkey", not be entertained with flowery and ultra vague phraseology. granted there are limits to the candor he can exhibit, but he can do much better. for example, mack brown changed his offense after colt mccoy graduated in the belief that his current team would better suit the new offense. their offense is struggling big time (almost rated as low as us)and just got hammered by UCLA. after the loss, his comments were...."we were beaten in every phase of the game, that's not texas football and we are going to do what it takes to change that. you might be seeing different personnel on the field next week". just this morning he was quoted as saying, when asked what he was going to do to fix his offense, his response was...."we still really don't know". i know that sounds dumb OUT OF CONTEXT, but it's honest, straight to the point and leaves noone unsure of what he meant. i like coach miles a lot and try to give him the benefit of the doubt in this difficult time (last 2 yrs) and fully support him turning our program around, but sometimes he is his own worst enemy. he should hire a pr guy and if he already has one, should fire him. i think most of LSU fans are reasonable people but we DO NOT WANT NOR APPRECIATE being "brushed off" or the subject changed or unintelliglble (sp) and extremely vague answers given to honest questions about the program. even if the news is bad, i think he should be honest with us (as long as it doesn't harm or embarass a player of course).

I really don't know why Les speaks with the media like he does. If you talk to the guy one on one or hear him at TAF events, he comes across totally different.

Les is a good communicator in smaller settings. He just tries too hard to speak formally in press conferences and espn/cbs interviews. It comes off as awkward and stiff. until, of course, someone ruins his michigan plans

Aside from butchering the King's English, he also appears to be defensive and has a chip on his shoulder. He does not respond well to criticism.

Agreed, it's tough to root for or sympathize with a person you can't understand. Also, he's just boring to listen to, he beats around the answers to questions, talking as long as possible without actually saying anything. I don't know what his plans are after coaching, but he certainly doesn't have a future in the media.

LM makes claims that game after game we never see come to pass. He said that Ford would see some PT, he didn't. He said that JL was pushing JJ, but after watching JJ play pporrly, that just doesn't seem the case.

He appears to be a liar. It's one thing to not show your hand to your opponents, I understand this. But I think he would be better served if he cut these tactics out. It's hard to gain the respect and support of a fanbase when you constantly mislead or mis-inform them.

I would rather he simply side-step certain issues regarding PT instaed of flat-out making statements which tend to make him look either not in charge of his program or assinine.

I have been saying this for several years now. He has his own way of communicating ideas and feelings to the media. I like Les Lies and I believe he is doing a great job. The situation is this, It comes down to the QB and weither he is capable of running the offense that is in place. I just hope that both qb's continue to improve and I hope that the LSU coaching staff is looking for a JUCO transfer SOPH or Jr. who can come in next year and play in 2011 and 2012. You can have all the talent in the world on a football team, but if you don't have a QB that can run the offense, lead the team with confidence, with few mistakes, then you will find yourself in the same place LSU currently in. finds itself.

The longer the answer, the less you know.

Apply that to your OP.

Les couldn't care less of what the media thinks about him. That's why he speaks that way. If opposing coaches and players think we are coached by an idiot, advantage Les. Large percentage of our fan base doesn't understand that. Either they are too ignorant, or they are too worried about Les' in game attire.

Guilbeau's take

quote:

He doesn't always sound clueless, but when he does I think it's because he doesn't prepare himself for what questions might be asked because he's really not that concerned with what the media thinks or what they may ask or how he is perceived. He's not self-absorbed. He really doesn't care about press conferences. I don't think he reads the paper much either.

which sounds about right. the season wrap up series on the Advocate site read like a totally different guy was being interviewed. it was pretty insightful, not much on the Miles-isms.

Taking the heat he has taken in his time at LSU when looking at what his record is at LSU, you would probably have a chip on your shoulder too.

i wish he had more Fight and Resolve, like he did at Okie st.

His pressers have become unlistenable...God bless the reporters that have to decipher that coachspeak day in day out.

Comprehension challenged?

I simply said the man speaks quite well one on one or in smaller setting. That does not mean I am an insider or know anything more than anyone else.

kind of hard to respect anyone who doesn't respect you enough to be honest.

And so stubborn that he would do the opposite of what everyone around him (staff included) is advising him to do.

he is stubborn, he is arrogant, and he thinks he's this super witty genius with the media.

“I think we look at the opportunities to play Jarrett Lee,” Miles said. “I think he’s worked very hard at it. He’s more mature. There is a very fine line with that field and the boundary, and making sure that he’s ready to step onto the field and do the things that we’ve expected him to do is kind of my push. Frankly, it’s getting closer and closer, and we like him.
“It’s never going to be necessarily the fact that the other guy is just doing poorly. It’s with the complement of the efforts that Jarrett Lee has. He’s worked hard at it. He has continued to compete and continues to improve, so my view is looking for opportunities to get him on the field. It’s really a game plan going into each week to be honest with you, but this week as well.”

this makes no sense at all

I honestly couldn't care less about Miles' press conferences. I'm stunned anyone does.

stunned?

that sounds like an unusual reaction Les (oops).

since all practices are closed, there is no injury report, no player status can be discussed, and no game plans or schemes can be discussed, his media talks are all we have. everybody is guessing about everything. my point is that he is so vague with EVERYTHING or he completely misleads (even if for competitive reasons) , it's hard to dis some fans for guessing wrong when noone knows what is right. for all we know, JL and MF have quit the team and are in the french foreign legion trying to forget right now.
