Advocate/AP article

quote:

Former LSU and NFL football star Leonard Marshall says his football playing days left him struggling with short-term memory loss and erratic behavior.

quote:

In 2015, Marshall spoke about the dangers of concussions during a Louisiana coaches clinic. He said he displays the symptoms of chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE. He also said he was in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease.

I've been to a few of Chris Nowinski's lectures about concussions/CTE and the research they do at BU. As a guy who got his "bell rung" more than a few times in football and beyond, that shite is fricking terrifying.

That guy was a monster back in the day, teamed up with LT on the same Giants defense. So sad to hear about this.

How many brains do you think CTE research has in their fridge by now?

More like those mushrooms that grow on fallen trees in the woods. They're yellowed and look like they're in decay when compared to "healthy" brain tissue. It really is pretty disturbing.

In HS I played with a guy that got his bell rung on the KO team and got up and went to the other team's sidelines and just stood there. Coach Weiner sent me over to get him after the next play. He literally didn't know where he was.

I wasn't that guy, but similar happened to me on a kickoff. I thought I was going to take on one of their linebackers who was acting cocky the entire game. He planted me. After I got up, I started trotting/staggering over to the opponents bench. About halfway there, I realized what I was doing and turned around. Still, that and other times I've had my bell rung, makes me a little worried, especially since my dad passed with alzheimer's 4 years ago.

So sad to hear this about Lenny. He was a monster of a lineman on that 1982 Orange Bowl team.

What's also a downer was how his "little" brother Kenny never panned out academically in HS. That dude was a fricking Monster! Had he made the bare minimum grades, he would've been a star at LSU (or anywhere he wanted to go).
