I think the only reason Laxton's performance doesn't get more praise than it does is because it was a blowout.

Had LSU won 1-0 with him carrying the team, it would be more historic imo.

But it was just a complete team domination

Lange is 12-0 with a 1.97 era. He has 131k in 114ip compared to Laxton's 98k in 109ip. You put the numbers together and I think it's clear Lange is better as a freshman

I don't think you understand the differences in the game over the last 22 years to compare those stats and make that claim.

Almost everyone was a homerun threat in the 90's.

They were both awesome.

We need to be careful with Lange. I am very glad hat Maneri
is being cautious with Lange and his usage.

Our 4 best ever past freshman pitchers Laxton, Shultz, Mestapey and
Off all tailed off in their college career. The first 3 had arm problem
and Ott just lost his edge.

Nola was solid as a freshman but gave little indication to the greatness
he showed his next 2 years. While.Lange is far superior to Nola as a
freshman, he has to improve to reach Nola which unfortunately hasn't
happened with our past freshmen AA pitchers

I never thought we'd see the day at which people would forget how truly spectacular Todd Walker was. Walker is the only possible answer to this question and no, it's not close.

Best pitcher? OK, we can talk between Lange and Laxton. But best freshman? It's Walker. Walker's freshman year was insanely great.

that's a pretty bold statement from you

Todd Walker's freshman year is better and it's "not close" when compared to Laxton or Lange?

Aside the fact that it's apples and oranges comparing hitting stats to pitching staffs, saying it's not close is basically saying you can't even debate it. I think you can at least argue strongely in favor of Laxton...

better than Laxton?

Large sample size, yes. Laxton had a great run but had more downs than Lange.

There is not one contemporaneous observer from 1993 who would have made the argument Laxton had a better freshman year than Walker. Walker's 1992 season was other-worldly. He was the first player in LSU history to hit 400. He slugged 652! Even in the more offensive era, that's spectacular.

He led the SEC in hitting and in RBI. He was LSU's cleanup hitter from day one and the best player on the team as soon as he stepped on to the field. Laxton was a great player, right away. Walker was legendary. You knew you were watching a once in a lifetime player.

There is no superlative too great for Todd Walker's LSU career.

Lange is the best freshman pitcher I have ever seen. What he has done this year is amazing.

You should have qualified that with best freshman baseball player.

I've seen some pretty excellent freshmen in other sports over the years.

I don't necessarily disagree with you

but I think there is more than enough room to debate.

On the biggest stage, Laxton went out and completely dominated a very good offense to win a championship. Completely dominated being an understatement.

This doesn't warrant it's own thread, but Deichmann has raised his BA about 30 points in the last couple days, getting hits in his last three games. Not setting the world on fire just yet but seems to be moving in the right direction.

Laxtons stats are far better when you look at the era. Laxton played when college baseball scores often resembled slow pitch softball

For baseball ... true dat.

Football -- Fournette [true], Tommy Hodson [RS]

Basketball -- Mahmoud-whatever Jackson, and it's not close [Pistol played when frosh couldn't play with the varsity so not true numbers]

Baseball -- Walker and Lange

I saw him in the Winn Dixie showdown...said who the hell is #12. He started off against the best competition raking. My favorite player of all time at LSU.
