4.7 seconds left, LSU down 2.

LSU inbounds the ball, dribbles across court to about the 3pt line, passes to Hannibal who bobbles, recovers, and drives to the basket for a finger roll layup with about .2 or .3 left on the clock in the background. Clock runs out, ruled a good basket, goes to review.

They aren't reviewing the actual shot as it was clearly good. They review the clock operator not starting the clock at the correct time. Clock clearly didn't start on time...looks like clock didn't start until LSU ball handler was about 2-3 strides/1 maybe 2 dribbles up the court (not quite at half court, maybe right in front of the coach's box area). Clock was probably somewhere between .5 seconds and 1 second off, realistically.

Instead of ruling that the clock was operated incorrectly and restarting play with 4.7 seconds again, which I'd completely understand and think would be fair to both teams, they rule that the shot is no good and play is over. They basically assumed that play would have happened exactly like it did if the clock started on time and that Hannibal wouldn't have had time to get it off. Complete bullshite because chances are once Hannibal got the ball and sees less than 2 seconds on the clock, he takes a shot instead of driving to the rim...but when he sees that he has time, he drives. How is he supposed to know in real time that the clock operated choked his one and only job?

If that's the correct ruling by the NCAA rulebook, then that is absolute frickery and needs to be changed immediately. If that's not correct, I'd think that game should be able to be protested or challenged.

Here’s the video and a snippet of the rules. LINK

To me, this reads that it should have been a do over

I have never seen an official overrule a basket due to a clock operator error. I have followed NCAA basketball for 42 years.

If the officials don’t notice the clock started late and blow it dead immediately that’s on them. What they just did is made up a ruling and that doesn’t exist.

I guess the questions are - what does “shall be canceled” mean? And what does “until it has been rectified” mean?

I assume re-do the play?

HS gym HS refs ... I can't believe posters are champions for this nonsense (other threads).

It's either stands and OT game or it's a do-over for 4.7 seconds.

November CBB is the worst. I've said that many times in the past.

by my inexact estimate of from when the ball first leaves Trae's hands as the inbounder to when the clock on the screen starts, 1.78 seconds passes. Like I get every human may not be perfect especially with time in basketball where every 0.10 seconds matters but still almost 2 seconds off at the end of your championship game? Mickey Mouse reffing in a Mickey Mouse tournament. No wonder this shite didn't get on TV

Jr. High refs know better than to do what was just done in that game.

Utah is about to inbound with 4.6 left down by 3 against State. Let’s see when the clock starts.

It doesn’t start when it leaves his hands. It starts when the in bounds player first touches it, so your number is way off.

I feel like 98% of the time we discuss a protest it’s moreso just a bad call

This might legitimately have been done against the rule. I’d for sure file a protest of this game.
