Kiffin, a great outcome O did not earn

It was never a good thing to pursue this guy. Best case scenario he would have been here one year. The probable scenario is we would have overpaid for someone without the dedication of someone like Aranda.

The bad news is this was a critical thinking error by Coach O. Pursuing Kiffin was never the best option. We will probably be fortunate enough to get a fine coordinator, but it raises a concern about the quality of decision making on significant issues. Let's hope this was an aberration.

So he should have just ignored the possibility of kiffin?

I agree to a certain extent. I don't think Kiffin was a long term solution. On the other hand it would've been great for recruiting. Like him or not Kiffin is a big name and it would've been a splashy hire. High school kids are all about that splash.

I had to LOL at what Scott Rabalais wrote...

quote:

Apparently Kiffin wanted to be a head coach so badly he was willing to pass on LSU’s millions for the job at … Florida Atlantic. Not Florida, nor a team in the ACC’s Atlantic Division, but Florida Atlantic. The school will probably have to pay Kiffin in coupons to South Florida restaurants to round out what will pass for even a modest compensation package ($1 million per year) by today’s college coaching standards.

Yes. You don't chase after someone who you know will only be here one year. Have to think about continuity and the impact of being in this same position next year.

100% agree. More of a prick than Spurrier and happy to not have his drama.

Kiffin will fail again as a head coach at FAU.

Yes.

This is the problem, and a criticism of Coach O. In a vacuum, as a single perfunctory move, hiring Kiffin is a good move. But good coaches must make hires in service of a long term strategy, not what serves him best at any particular moment in time.

The fact that O couldn't get a straight answer from his bestie is sad. Say "hey, I want a head coach spot, not coming there". Then Kiff's name wouldn't have been in the search all along and Canada or Helfrich would have already signed.

That was the guaranteed scenario, he wasn't going to leave mid year. Best case was two years.

Who have we missed out on at this point?

With that said I do agree that O waited to long for Kiffin when the writing was on the wall last week he was going to be a head coach.

I understand that. But I also think that he would have faced harsh criticism if he were never even considered.

SEC would have blackballed Kiffin if he went to LSU. SEC would have sent to get Kiffin before his press conference at LSU.

I hope it reflects more of Kiffin's character than Orgeron's inability to "read" Kiffin's intention.
